For those who asked, my son has a diagnosis and an IEP since he was 3. His diagnosis is autism. He also has sensory processing disorder and an expressive/receptive speech disorder. My daughter also has a diagnosis of "autism spectrum disorder" and a 504. Though my daughter LOVES school, she has been... |

My 5 year-old will be starting Kindergarten this year. Thing is, I don't know if he is ready to deal with the demands of public education and I am seriously considering homeschooling him if some major things don't change over the next 8 months. Here are my concerns: 1. He still uses a sippy cup most... |

Those are great! I especially like the first one. What kind of camera and lens did you shoot those with? |

Eating disorders are psychological conditions and have nothing to do with how one was fed as an infant. I have struggled with both anorexia and bulimia, from around age 8 into my early 20s. At times, it was quite severe. I still have some issues with food, but at this point it is purely sensory-rela... |

azure, yep, puddle for sure! And I know exactly what you mean about the words. My son has a speech disorder, so he tends to default to crying or tantrums. But sometimes, out of the blue, he will communicate really, really clearly in words exactly what he is feeling. I will never forget the first tim... |

Eew. As a vegetarian myself, I find that kinda gross. Considering so many people have food allergies and/or are on special or restricted diets, errors like this can be potentially dangerous. |

I'm in my 30s. I had severe sensory issues as a child, to the point that many activities were either uncomfortable or impossible for me. I am happy to say that most of my sensory issues have greatly improved. I still struggle with repetitive noise, and touching metal or paper - and the sounds of any... |

I think the clinician you're dealing with is likely spot-on in the assessment of your son's suicide language being more about wanting the situation to stop, not life. For a child, life can feel so overwhelming, and especially a kid on the spectrum. I had immense difficulty expressing myself as a chi... |

I want to thank everyone for your input. Today I had the opportunity to try out the non-punishment approach. I almost slipped. When my son totally went off because his sister wanted a barn facing one direction and he wanted it another, he hit the floor knees-first and turned to a sobbing heap. My kn... |

I hope you took no offense to what I wrote. If so then I apologize, your post was a near spot on description of me when I was five. I'm just trying to provide some insight. I should point out that I did stop hitting my head by the time I got to third grade. I'm now in my 30's and a fairly well adju... |

Scoots, that actually makes me sad.
Chronos, we've tried all of that - except sending him to sit on the couch instead of going to the corner when he flips out for losing a game. Maybe this different approach will yield more positive results. I'm going to try it. |

My son deliberately gags himself and tries to vomit when he is upset. Firmly telling him to stop usually works. Your child's issue may be completely different, though. |

I didn't read all of the above. They have some excellent web-based charter schools. I am keeping this option open for my son, since I am not sure he will be prepared to deal with the demands of public mainstream school by the start of the 2011-2012 school year. The web-based schools are nice because... |
