Sorry, just needed to vent. My kid's teacher said that to me today. She's a really nice lady, but she just doesn't "get it."

Perhaps some oral sensory-motor stimulation would help replace the screaming? Chewlery (like this http://www.nationalautismresources.com/chewelry.html) would be an option for something that she could have with her all the time. Other oral sensory activities that might help if the issue is a need fo...

My 5YO DD verbally stims by screaming as loud as she can. It is deafening to everyone around her. She is especially having trouble at social functions and school since she is regularly screaming. She thinks it's funny and doesn't respond to redirection or discipline. How do I help her understand tha...

I forgot to mention, I brought this up to my psychologist who specialises in ASD and she agreed. She has several patients on the spectrum who also have best friends on the spectrum.

Based on my experience, yes. We're drawn to each other, almost magnetically. It's always "just something about that person" to which I feel a connection and then, getting to know them, discover their traits.

Yes, that. I used to get in trouble when I was a teenager working fast food because I would stop making the food in order to talk with my hands.

Quoting LeagueGirl: The more I keep reading this thread and on Babycenter, the more I wonder how often I tick people off and they just don't say anything. I was accused of being snarky once on Babycenter when I told someone "excuse me but I never said she couldn't say she has three kids so don't pu...

Sorry, it took me so long to get back. This has been a trying week. We had the IEP meeting yesterday and I think it went ok. I spoke to my case manager a lot on the phone before hand so she was aware of any concerns I had and was able to address them ahead of time. They seemed to be more for giving ...

Right now I'd really like to not mess with the school district altogether. I know other parents have had to spend thousands of dollars on legal representation fighting this particular school district on a different accommodation issue (food allergies). I'd really like to save the headache and not de...

I requested a draft copy of the IEP document and they said No, I have to wait to get the final copy in the mail. I asked for a copy of the assessment to be faxed to my pediatrician. They said I can make a copy of the IEP document when I receive it in the mail and give it to my pediatrician. I may ne...

I am new to the IEP process and so far I think I may be a little behind. We got our daughter assessed and they qualified her for speech therapy, OT and special ed preschool (if we want it). We have decided to just do the therapies as socially she's just not ready for preschool. I'm a little worried ...

Question for the light lovers....my daughter is sensitive to bright lights, must have curtains drawn, sunglasses on and will meltdown if a camera flashes too bright. However, she LOVES fireworks and little toys with spinning lights. These seem contradictory to me. Does anyone else experience both a ...
