For me it was luck. An acquaintance from school randomly helped me get a job one day, and then everything pretty much turned around from there.

Ear plugs + headphones on top of ear plugs + fan or air conditioner running in the background. If someone is being so loud that you can still hear him/her despite taking all of these steps, then he/she is being too noisy, in my opinion. If all else fails, wake up early and do things that are importa...

Thanks for the responses! SammichEater, it sounds like you and I have very similar ways of thinking. I think that we need that "auditory" input in order to translate a word on a page into a picture in the back of our minds. You described yourself as someone who thinks in pictures, so it makes sense ...

Wow, this topic is so fascinating to me! But I am still having a little bit of trouble imagining what it is like to read without an inner voice. For those who have said that they do not always have an inner voice when they read, perhaps you could help me out with this. Say for example that you read ...

I always hear a voice in my head when I read and when I write, although it is not exactly my own voice. I can't imagine being able to read or write without this inner voice. I have to hear the words and see them at the same time and really concentrate on them to understand what I am reading. This is...

I am sorry that you find yourself in this difficult situation. I tend to agree with Chronos. I am 23 years old and most likely an Aspie. I live in my parents' attic. They pay for my health insurance and drive me to class a few times a week. But, other than that, I keep to myself and take care of mys...

I pick up on subtle things that people say and do (and notice when something in my surroundings has changed, etc...) all of the time, and then I use this information to help answer questions or figure things out. It's what fools NT's into thinking that I'm smart :) . I think it is actually quite eas...

I am 23 years old and feel like I am about 12 years old. But, I'm pretty sure that my heart has beat as many times as the heart of an average 35-year-old due to all of the anxiety and stress. So, I have actually always assumed that I will die sooner than NT's my age.

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: What do cows drink?

The first thought that popped into my head was milk (automatic association of "milk" with the words "cow" and "drink"), followed immediately by water. Then, I started to think that perhaps it was a trick question-cows must get a pretty significant amount of water from the grass they eat, so maybe th...

I found this using google.

I know that we haven't spoken very much in the past, but I am very glad to hear that you are OK, and working on getting things back to normal  Alcohol and drugs can do a number on your system. I myself was lucky enough to quit drinking several months before I had my emotional breakdown last y...

I agree with kahlua. My symptoms didn't really become severe or obvious until I was about 6 years old. Up until then, my parents probably would have described me as a happy, normal child. But if I look back carefully, all of the signs were there. I still had some of the same traits and tendencies th...

I definitely don't think you are way off base; it sounds like you could be on the spectrum. It took me until I was 21/22 to realize that I most likely had Asperger's or some other type of PDD. The therapist that I am seeing now has been encouraging me to get officially evaluated by a psychologist. S...

Related question that has been puzzling me for a while now: I find that although loud noises make me jump, I rarely turn my head to look and see what is actually making the noise. I have read in my anatomy & physiology book that it is a built-in human reflex to turn one's head toward the source ...

This is an interesting topic. I have realized in the past that the mood people think I am in is generally not the mood I am really in. When I was younger, people would often ask me what was wrong, or whether I was angry or feeling ill, when in fact I was fine. The moods I am in the most often are: 1...
