Hello there! Well, let me begin by saying that you are certainly not alone. After a disastrous period of time in which my social anxiety took a turn for the worse, I was forced to leave my job abroad and return home. Since jumping back into therapy, I've had the diagnosis of Social Anxiety Disorder ...

I find that I often go into a trance-like state when stimming. Like many other posters, I rub my feet together as a way to relax when I'm getting ready for bed or just generally sleepy. I rock from side to side or back and forth when I'm concentrating deeply on something, I flick my nails together w...

what would be an example of a structured daily routine? Going to sleep and waking up at the same times each day, performing personal hygiene daily, eating the requisite number of meals at roughly the same time each day--that kind of thing. It seems there are a significant number of autistics who st...

Why would successful ones even be diagnosed?

Most likely because they were diagnosed in childhood and learned to deal with their issues - or were especially proficient in a certain skill or technical area - and thereby became 'successful' in adulthood.

My long-term memory in general is awful, but my earliest memory is being taken to the doctor's office to have my tracheotomy tube and stoma removed. This would have been when I was 4 years old, and as I have heard that emotions are strongly tied to our brain's memory recall, it makes sense that I wo...

Yeah and then trying to explain it to people is like :wall: I honestly don't even feel there's any point in trying to explain. Their pity is neither comforting nor helpful, and when my family gets riled up about my continued unemployment, consideration of my issues goes right out the window anyway....

I find this to be a very interesting article, as I am seeing this hypothesis played out in my own life. I managed to graduate college without a diagnosis, but now that I've entered the phase in my life where I'm expected to actually go out and get a job, my problems with executive function and socia...

I think I'm on the opposite end of the emotional spectrum than what you described, OP. I can only relate to others emotional states or suffering through logical examination of the issues they're facing. I can sympathize, to an extent, but either there is no emotional involvement at all because I'm b...

I was emotionally and physically abused as a child, by both my Father and peers - but, as others have stated, I believe that the emotional abuse I dealt with at school was a result of children and teachers reacting to my AS traits. Everything else I dealt with growing up most likely made those trait...

I do free weights and cardio on alternating weekdays. Weekends are my free days. I don't count calories, but I do generally keep track of what I eat, and I stick to whole grains, vegetables, and fruit as much as possible. I'm 5'3" and 115 lbs. It helps that I love to research healthy eating, though....

Hello, Kody, it's nice to meet you! Like you, I was diagnosed with Asperger's late in life - it wasn't recognized until I was 23 years old, and only after I took it upon myself to seek out a professional. Without going into specifics, I also suffered various forms of abuse throughout my early childh...

I actually recently had a breakdown, and haven't been able to leave my apartment for going on three weeks because of overwhelming social anxiety. The fear of judgment and constantly needing to be 'keyed up' in order to 'properly respond' in social situations culminated in horrible fight-or-flight re...

I'm fairly open about my neurology. My close family and friends know that I have AS, as do some old co-workers of mine, and I am always ready to jump into a discussion about Autism, especially if I think that talking about my own experiences (I not only have AS, but also a younger brother with more ...
