I'm sure this has been said before, but I haven't seen much written on the topic. I find it challenging that I cannot edit posts on a support forum, for a number of reasons. Primarily I'm worried about confidentiality. Being that we are limited to a single account, it stands that it is effectively i...

Has anyone had experience funding an autism-related program, or are otherwise aware of funding organizations? I find most funders focus on child-centric issues or direct family grants. It's less common to find interest in adult-oriented programming that would be more relevant to us, here. For refere...

As for me, I have less trouble with unspoken social rules. Most of the unspoken rules, I find, have actually been extensively chronicled on the Internet. One might think this would make life easier, and indeed, I'm now at a point where I can predict what I need to do in most any interaction. The cha...

My Swedish friends tell me that, in their country, walking up close to strangers and talking excitedly at them is either a sign of mental illness or the precursor to a robbery. That's really weird. Do people actually do that in the States? If someone did those things to me I would also assume that ...

What is it like to live in Sweden with Asperger's? I'm truly curious; I'm sure every place has its own perception of what it means to be on the autism spectrum, and with that come its own stereotypes and shared experiences. I'm at a point in my life where I'm seriously considering making a move ther...

I'm careful not to judge the people of Autism Speaks for a number of reasons. Clearly, they're a "splitter" organization that sees Asperger's as a "difference" and autism as a "disability." They're hardly an anti-Asperger's eugenics group. For many, autism is a severe, destructive condition that tur...

Amazon.com has a program called Mechanical Turk which allows you to sign up and accept various Online tasks from other people in exchange for a set fee. For example, a dictation company can offer $5.00 for listening to a few minutes of audio and typing out what you hear. An Online magazine can pay $...

I explain it as having to concretely learn social skills that others intuitively pick up on. To the person with an ASD, it is like a second language that they need to be taught. They also have very personalized views of the world, which can manifest in a singular focus and often, the world they see...

Thanks, everyone. I'm starting to feel a bit better about it, now. I tend to agree with the others. We are often advised that other people's negative reactions to us sometimes have nothing to do with us or anything we've done, but rather come from that person dealing with stresses we are unaware of....

I had the worst conversation at work yesterday; it was bad enough I feel like my career might be over. To give a bit of background, the last three months I've been working as a project manager for a mental health agency. Although I'm technically a contractor and not an employee, meaning that I'm pai...

I find that, depending on where you are, most people appreciate it if you say something to them in passing.

"Beautiful day, isn't it?"

"Too nice to be inside today, huh?"

Though, this is more true on a residential street and in the suburbs than in the city.

Explaining Asperger's has always been a challenge. It is a challenging state of being to describe to someone, more so than any other I've encountered. I've been trying to compose an "elevator speech" about it to describe it, as well as responses to situations I often find myself in where I may confu...

As a child, I would throw screaming fits if I was made to wear wool or other abrasive fabrics. My family was good enough to realize that their particular choice in fabrics was not worth the distress to me and as such I was allowed to wear sweat pants and t-shirts. In my teens I started to realize th...

The tech industry has long-since been forward-thinking enough to hire persons on the autism spectrum; Microsoft and Google have announced publicly that they supported persons with Asperger's. Outside of that field, for those of us not so gifted in ones and zeroes, some retailers such as Walgreens an...

So what they're saying is, they refuse to room with anyone who is not a white-collar worker with a four-year degree?

I can't help but find that kind of elitist. :(

As well as damaging to my housing prospects.

Someone in my family told me I would never have any friends because I'm boring. :{

Worse, I made a post under not one, but two furries. I'm going to catch fleas.
