Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Do intelligent/aspie people lead boring lives?

Maybe this isn't 'aspie' related but I can see where a routine can tend to be boring, especially if that routine is a decade or more in the making. For example, my parents would send me to church or go to picnics and Disneyland vacations. At the time, I even thought it was kind of silly, but what co...

I am more into writing non-fiction work, kind of in a science/research area. I cannot find myself putting word to paper (or computer in this place). I was curious if you think this is because I am just a poor writer or something to do with the way that aspies think or something else. I get so confli...

He is/was a medical doctor, maybe has some kind of inclination for science and math. He is very repetitive in what he says. He has compulsive interests. Most people disagree with him and he doesn't budge on his idea even though he seems to predict certain economic events and conditions. ... Here is ...

I have noticed some groups (through craigslist) in the area and they seem to focus on kids with autism.

I wouldn't mind going just to see how the discussion is conducted?

I am in Atlanta now, could go to places in South.

Do you avoid conversations with people because you can usually predict how the conversation will go even before it starts? And do you tend to avoid social interaction altogether because of this thought.

Is this some form of phenomena?

Well everything is tough when you are young. And the whole point of going to college is to learn things you don't already know. I would suggest a lot of people study some engineering or science in college and then lean more into their real career choice. Most of the people that I went to school with...

Why do you think you do it? I think it could all be summed up with nervousness. You see a person, they see you. What do you do? Do you look down? Keep staring? It is a weird feeling. I guess I could stare at the ground and walk around because I can't make good eye contact but that would look weirder...

"I have a relatively high IQ 140." IQ can be a meaningless indicator. I studied Electrical. It is either Electrical or Computer and maybe Aerospace. There are different sub fields in study but the most interesting work is with radio and signal analysis. For undergrad, the most complicated stuff you ...

Is it more difficult to be socially awkward at work or not? There are advantages and disadvantages. One advantage is that you are in an office and normally most people are expected to act professionally. Most people aren't out to harm you or crude to you. There is a disadvantage in that you can be f...

I don't like being around people for two reasons: 1. I feel like all of their energy is transmitted to me. All of their thoughts are sent to me. It is like I am reading their minds and it is too much to bare. Normally it is mostly negative and it is directed at me. 2. I feel like people are a threat...

"If you are a diagnosed Aspie, do you have difficulties understanding things like motivation in works of fiction?" I read all the time. All the time. But I can't read fiction, science fiction or anything else. I try to read sci-fi but I normally prefer biographies or science related texts. Males als...

For me, it is painful. On women, I feel if I look too long that I am flirting with them or hitting on them. And I feel awkward thinking that someone else thinks I am hitting on them. I guess the same can be true for guys. I don't want to feel like I hitting on some guy. So that is the sexual compone...

I want to do things that most people don't normally do. In a perfect world, I would read books for 12 hours a day and do that for the rest of my life. I can't do that, I have to get a job, interact with others, go out to eat, etc, etc. You said, "stopping you from doing things you enjoy". Most peopl...

There is a problem with all of these.

What if you aren't in school? What if you hate church or religion? Volunteering? Pointless.

And what hobbies, what if you don't have any?

They are good suggestions but like I mentioned, not perfect.

It is great for careers in engineering and science. In terms of jobs that have little interaction, you can contribute.

I wouldn't recommend becoming a trial lawyer.

But I find out that I can't work 24/7 for the rest of my life. I want to break the cycle and socialize.
