I see what you mean about men being a bit more tolerant of situations that aren't quite what they expected, but a man *could* use the woman's AS against her in a custody dispute. When things were worse between me and my husband I actually had to think about that unfortunate reality. Now that he's w... |

I've gotten this a few times and it's a pet peeve of mine because it makes it sound like I don't have feelings.
Never a friend though, always someone I was in a relationship with (my ex and my now-partner) - they don't know how close they came to sleeping next to the computer monitor for a month. |

I never think in pictures, just in words. I never realized that this was common. I always think in pictures. I've heard philosophers and linguists talk about thinking in words and I thought they were crazy. I find it very hard to think in words. Sure, I can pick up words from my memory (like now) b... |

Thank you, quaker. I'm still not sure what's up with me, but the PTSD is worse than the AS right now so that's what I'm going to focus on in therapy. Once I've dealt with that, I'll look at what aspects still remain. I think that's a good idea. I didn't end up with PTSD until I was an adult, so for... |

Now, on the flip side, when I drink to the point where my guard is down, I would apparently adopt the accents and speech styles of the person/people that I was talking with (Quite effectively, I've been told. I just wish that I could do it consciously). I didn't need to be "drunk", just mildly buzz... |

Yes. My interest right now is body modification, and while I'd rather learn about the anthropological side of it, I'm having trouble finding anything from that angle so I'm learning everything else (techniques, brands of jewelry, etc.). It's frustrating because my interests are usually better docum... |

What I mean is, do you get really excited when you find out something new about your special interest, that you just cannot think of anything else, and you start panicking because you want to find out more but you've found out everything you can and you feel like running in circles because you're s... |

This is how I am, and honestly - if she is like me, I don't think you'll be able to teach her. I have gone through hell because not only can't I spot creepy people, but if I allow people time to explain their actions, I will believe them. See, I know this intellectually, but it has no emotional reso... |

Household chores are utterly, completely exhausting, and sometimes impossible. I'm trying to get my partner to help me do things like plan meals and make a chore list, but it's really hard to get an ADHD person like him to settle down enough to make a list This hits the nail right on the head for m... |

Not until recently when I realized how serious my difficulties with communication and social skills were. My sensory issues could be frustrating, but I thought of them as "sensory issues" and not "autistic issues" unless I sat down and thought about it. Same thing when I had problems with numbers - ... |

Dishes are definitely the worst for me too, PeaceFrog (Hello fellow Portlander, by the way :D). I need a high level of organization to function. Unfortunately, I'm the one who has to create that level of organization that I need to function. Household chores are utterly, completely exhausting, and s... |

Agreed, great fun! :o) I am white England-born and my friend was white south african (=don't know if this makes a difference or not) I have a friend who is British South African, and given a compliment she will put herself down quite a lot (by my standards). I don't know if that was just her or not... |

I think the idea comes from two things. Firstly, AS people can be hard for NTs to understand, and may get upset by things that NTs are fine with, and sometimes NTs think the AS person is deliberately acting difficult because they find it hard to imagine that a person could genuinely find touch pain... |

I have some trouble with grammar now that I am chronically sleep-deprived. Before - well, my mom started asking me to proofread and give suggestions for her college papers when I was in fifth grade. Language is my primary special interest though, so that's something to keep in mind |

Growing my hair out was a pain, but once it got long enough to put into a ponytail, I was fine. It's past my waist now and I wear it in buns or braids. I can't stand it loose for sensory reasons, but I love how different hair styles look. I actually spend less time on my hair now than I did when it ... |
