Congrats! I understand what you mean about the confusion: my son tested into the gifted program and the assessor was blown away by his intelligence but, meanwhile, he can't figure out how to dress himself or do other activities of daily living without assistance. That divide in mental functioning is...

So, my son (5) was expelled from summer camp this week. He has Selective Mutism and doesn't talk there, and would have meltdowns if he couldn't have his needs met, or due to the excessive noise/chaos/external stimuli, and if they'd "punish" him by taking away his special interest (Legos). He was acc...

I'm so glad she recommends 20 hours instead of the usual recommendation of 40 hours a week. Research indicates that 40 hours a week is actually too much, and kids who receive 20 or 30 hours a week of intervention progress better than those receiving 40 hours a week. The managed care situation in my...

My advice is for any child to go and see an EDUCATIONAL PYSCH. They will be able to complet tests and then you can present them at a local appointment. You can in the UK get private EDpysch appointements if you google it and if you can afford it. Jelibean, is it possible to get an educational psych...

-It's also worth noting that, as an adolescent I was put on prozac (for the OCD elements of my AS I think) and suffered no manic effects, that I can recall anyway. In fact, it improved a lot of my symptoms. Does this rule out bipolar disorder? Not at all. Some drs use antidepressants in treatment f...

That's great. . .I'm glad things are looking up. I hope you can get some help while you're feeling better because it's pretty overwhelming to take care of during a crisis.

Ok. First off, if you have insurance, you have insurance. It doesn't matter who helped you get approved, at least not that I've ever heard of (maybe some states are weird). If you can't get in with the psych at your therapist's office (which is a very good idea--they should be exchanging information...

Been a while since I updated on myself so here goes.... Since late December I've been hearing voices, angry voices, and seeing people while alone in my apartment. On top of this, the world periodically shifts... as if I've lost my balance but I've not moved. Sometimes I'm sitting when this happens,...

I took Topamax for almost 2 years for seizures and migraines. I could not be happier to be off it. It made me dumber than a bag of hammers. It also caused aphasia: I could not remember simple words such as "chair" or "pen." I also had numbness in my extremities and metal mouth. The side effects less...

In a lot of ways it's a nightmare for me, but I think my son also has ADHD and THAT is what really causes me major anxiety (I cannot deal with the hyperactivity. . .it really sets me off).

I did this (along with a little cough) from the time I was about 7-13 or so. I didn't realize until much later that it was a tic; my mom always called it "nervous" or whatever.

I'm sorry you're going through all of this. . .it's difficult enough to navigate the system without multiple issues to juggle. I have no idea how Child Protective Services work in Canada; in the US they vary from county to county. Where I live, it's pretty difficult to get a child removed from his/h...

I'm not too bad with them, but my son FREAKS OUT when he has to go to the restroom in public. He is terrified of the automatic flushers they put on toilets now and the hand dryers. He makes me cover his ears while he pees and washes his hands.
