Reading the recent posts on this thread elicits what I find to be a poignant observation: The worst enemies of capitalism are the capitalists themselves. Unlike socialism, which makes almost everybody poor, capitalism does have the power to lift all boats. The problem is with the greed of the elite...

a negative income tax or a guaranteed wage for every citizen. It would be enough for basic house, a basic car and perhaps some things and if you want more, then you can work for it or find your passion and make money that way. that would save lots of money in the long run. I might upset some of my ...

I wish I had been born in more of a socialist country. I admit the side of that in me too. I'm caring for Mom with stage IV breast cancer, she and myself are determined to fight it, it is an uphill battle, but people have lived with stage IV for years an years with a fairly good quality of life. I ...

^^^ "falling down" was about the downer-est of downer movies AFAIC. I felt like I was torn up and rubbed in dogshat after watching it. Yeah, man, I hear ya. "Country" from 1984 with Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard was a downer too, especially when Sam's character tried to talk his friend out of shoot...

not everybody can easily learn to be a capitalist, this takes social intelligence of which a lot of us on this forum have issues. we don't all have the horatio alger genes. the people that DO have the horatio alger genes tend to be insufferably arch towards everybody else, lumping them all together...

When I was younger, I always liked villains better than heroes. Still do. They seemed more real. The heroes always had complex motives and lots of interpersonal connections. The villains were simple. Plus, they dressed better and were usually smarter. :) Sometimes I do too. Many times I think they ...

To Teasaidh: Yes, story of my life too. I mentioned on Wrong Planet before that many unpopular people seem genuinely nice (in my opinion) whereas many popular people seem psychopathic to me. I even have the tendency to empathize with unpopular fictional characters rather than those popular fictiona...

I know here in the U.S., you can get set top boxes that will convert HDTV signals into the NTSC that older sets use. I assume in Europe, you can do the same thing by downconverting the digital TV signal into PAL or SECAM. I've been using the same TV set since 1983, a 1982 Zenith, and we have a conve...

The original series. The music... some of the plots... some of the acting... they struck a cord in me and did something that none of the others did. Star Trek would not be where it is without the original series. Also... I enjoyed the Animated series as well. Since they have many of the writers and...

Questions from my AD&D days: 1. Which one is the twenty-sider? (The one with twenty sides, of course!) 2. What's a saving throw? (Your last chance to avoid the effects of an attack.) 3. Who's winning? (The pizza delivery guy!) 4. How long are you going to keep playing? (Until we're done.) 5. Ar...

The only part of you that gets exercise is your thumbs!" ~Dad "Your children's children are going to have abnormally curved spines, huge thumbs, and are going to be nearsighted!" ~Dad (again) "If you (insert "horrible" thing here - like getting a C in a class), then I'll t...
