Forum: Social Skills and Making Friends   Topic: less nervous around people when you were younger

Oh yes, I'd say I was much more confident in the younger years (before school came into the mix). I didn't have any frame of reference for social cues nor was I really aware that people would react a certain way if I did things socially unacceptable, so I was more free to be spontaneous. That's much...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: Unable to explain when you're upset?

I often find it difficult to explain why I'm upset about something in the moment because it can be a startling/emotional scenario, and it happens quite a bit. My advice to you would be to ask your girlfriend to give you time and space to calm down when those moments come up. I find it much easier to...

The only ones in my real life who know about WP are either on it already or know of my diagnosis by virtue of being close to me. Most of the ones in my life I don't expect to understand, so I don't tell them.

I've had many nicknames, all of which are tied to my real names and/or similar to them in some way, shape, or form.

Not that great at replying. I don't have my phone on 100% of the time because I'm not usually in a place where I can charge it easily, so I tend to preserve the battery by keeping it off. Either way, most of my friends know that I prefer having conversations in real-time (face-to-face, Facebook, Sky...

Since most of the members (myself included) are scattered geographically (i.e. outskirts of Toronto), I don't see any other option other than Toronto since it's really the midpoint between all the regions represented :s

You know your people skills probably aren't that bad at all. The number of "normal" people who don't have manners, aren't polite, and are poor communicators are astounding. For example - social skills 101. If someone asks you to do something, and you don't want to do it - you communicate. You don't...

Okay, now I know which zone(s) I've been stuck in for a while. The better question is, how does one get out of them??

[X] Other. Show us as individual people who have Autism, who struggle with the difficulties, and who can exceed all expectations under the right conditions. Dr. Temple Grandin had an excellent interview on NPR today, which I will provide a link to in another thread. Toward the end of the interview,...

^ This. There are periods when I have many, and periods when I have none.

To clarify myself, what I meant was that I've had too many crushes to mention on this thread.

I'm still in agreement/this applies to me as well, even with the clarification.

I was officially diagnosed with Asperger's. Last I checked, Asperger's was a part of the Autism Spectrum. Alternatively, Asperger's has been removed from the DSM-5, and even though the phrase still lives on here in spectrum circles, the replacement is still "Autism Spectrum Disorder". Either way, I ...

No and they slaughtered me socially because of it. ^ This. I never really understood why the NT kids in my classes at the time prided themselves on getting low grades. It was as if they were promoting mediocrity of academics :s My parents raised me to achieve far greater than the naysayers in eithe...

I still want a gf. But girls think this is bad, in order to get a girlfriend I have to not want one. The reason "stop looking" and related advice works is because it takes the edge off of meeting and talking to prospective new partners. I strongly recommend it. I've managed to find BOTH of my girlf...
