Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: What is your opinion on the "HFA vs AS" debate?

It depends if you're talking technically or not. Technically speaking, from a UK standpoint, both are not really officially recognised conditions so there isn't really a set definition to compare any more. Stating the obvious, HFA is the old now-retired diagnosis of Autism with the coloquial but non...

Hi there Kitty. Sorry to hear you're going to be in hospital. Of course I am coming at this from a position of not knowing your situation (Sorry, I only come back here occasionally these days). I always feel like I need to be clear about anxiety in and of itself simply being a normal emotion rather ...

I've been from one extreme to the other and back again. As I grew up I gradually understood I was different somehow. This got more and more pronounced until my teenage years when I was suicidal, self-harming and absolutely literally saw myself as some kind of not-quite-human monster. Bad times. I ha...

I'm a big believer that knowledge is power and would rather have the information that be left guessing, but, depending on how much you were expecting this, it can still be a lot to deal with. You're amongst friends here and many of us will have gone through similar things ourselves.

I was wondering, for someone on the spectrum, is it better, easier, more productive when relating to or working with someone who is autistic themselves or rather someone who is NT but has a good understanding of ASD (or at least a start on it plus a willingness to learn). I'm thinking parents, sibli...

A letter I will never send but need to write.... Dear Amy It's taken me a long time to be up to writing this, as what happened left me full of so many conflicting emotions. But, I wanted to say that I have gotten to a point now where, despite all that happened, I wish only happiness and good things ...

I'm Si / Simon and I'm a 36 year old hetro guy living in Northeast UK. I'm average build (ok, leaning more to dad-bod nowerdays), just shy of 6ft, longish dark hair (dyed black at the moment), a few tattoos and piercings here and there. I've got a little boy but his stays mostly with my ex. Not real...

I find it incredibly uncomfortable and upsetting. I wasn't diagnosed until 31. Watching my parents mock me while I'm having a meltdown and seeing some of my, with hindsight, overt autistic behaviors quite upsets me to be honest. I had a stressful and confusing childhood with the whole undiagnosed AS...

In addition to my previous post, it’s a ridiculous thing to overlook, but maybe it factors in to my comfort talking on the phone that I worked call center jobs for years before I moved to software development. Lol

While I get the difficulty with phone calls, for me, a lot of it still applies or even more so with messaging. I might not be good at non-verbal cues and all that stuff but you don't even get that with messaging. I suppose I have been trying (with limited success) the whole online dating thing for t...

When I was a child and that happened I think it was a fight or flight response kind of deal to stressful and confusing situations, usually where I felt afraid of teachers because of some escalating situation.

As others have noted, others can often misunderstand 'The Spectrum' as meaning a spectrum of humanity and their degree of autistic traits from NT to Kaner, rather than, as I believe it was intended, a spectrum of functionality amongst those diagnosed with ASD conditions. The problem I have with the ...

I think the important thing to bare in mind with pathological demand avoidance is that, while it sounds quite official and clinical, due to it not having very good definitions or (maybe therefore) evidence, it isn't clinically recognised by official health bodies. I trust the experts in their fields...

Haha, I opened this thread 100% expecting it to be someone talking about Homeopathy and the nonsense about water molecules having memories. I will quietly dismount my high-horse and put him safely back in the stable :p. Good that you have that ability. I was OK at chemistry up to GCSE level as I was...

Personality metrics like this tend not to be much more scientific than a horoscope and I know the MB types are not scientifically validated for the claims made against them. ...But then that's exactly what an INTJ Pisces would think! :p

I'm pretty hypersexual but, being HFA, find it stressful from a social side. I have found exploring kink to be a good way to switch off the overthinking part of my brain and just enjoy it. After I separated from my wife I have been trying to find someone I'm compatible with. I fell head over heels i...
