My point is that without a disability, you have a stronger chance of living a happy and fulfilling life without being LIMITED by your disability. No one likes limitations, especially when they are this strong and potentially hurtful. No one needs that. Of course, but if one does end up with a disab...

Curiouser and curiouser.

First it was vaccines, then candida, then rubella, then gluten/casein products, now milk specifically. What will be next? Air?

No matter what label one chooses to slap onto oneself, one still is whatever one is, I guess. This is why I don't like labels.

I agree.

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: How far back does you memory go?

I think my consistent memories date back significantly later than the time when I was nine - possibly 13-15. I do remember some fragments from my earlier childhood, and some of these are quite vivid, visually, but they're just that - fragments. These moments seem to be taken out of context as I can'...

I am certainly not a predominantly logical thinker, but I wouldn't say I am a predominantly emotional one either. Sure, emotions do play a large part in my thinking, but they do not seem to be its main component. If there is any single word that could describe my thinking style, it would probably be...

I had speech therapy as a child. I don't remember when exactly - the memories have become quite murky by now, - but I think I was not in school yet, or in grade one, because we were still living at my grandparents' place (we moved when I was around eight years old). At that time I could already spea...

Okay, you're losing me a bit here. I think what you're saying is that her squeeze machine came out of an obsession? Am I following you? If that's what you're saying, that's not quite true. She has sensory integration dysfunction and the machine was created to help with that. The machine was not cre...

I know all about the Rottenberg Center. Everybody does. Have you been there yourself? No. But I was hit by electricity once after touching a plug that was half bared (it was my own stupidity, but that is beside the point). Have you seen their program in action? Have you monitored their facilities? ...

Actually, it isn't Skinner who was the problem. Most Behavior mod programs seem to model their therapies on Pavlov. Look it up. Operant conditioning? Oh yes....I don't know why I forgot, thanks for bringing it up. I read quite a bit about Pavlov as a child, and later in grade eight while preparing ...

Neale, Your son's program sounds fantastic! Makes me feel happy for him. :) I'm quite familiar with B.F. Skinner and if you and Zwerfbeertje want to insist that the current programs are disrespectful of the individual and cruel, without having ever observed a behav mod program, particpated in one, r...

"Higher-functioning" is easy enough to diagnose as the only difference between the two is an IQ value, whether it's "high-functioning" or not is moot as it's "high-functioning" in relation to "low-functioning"; Well, if it were THIS easy to diagnose, there wouldn't be so many instances of misdiagno...

Zwerfbeertje: I agree. If you don't like ABA, that's your choice. My ABA program does not go beyond what ABA is about. If you knew the first thing about ABA today, youd know that it and other behav mod programs like it are not one-stop fits-all and abusive anymore like in its infancy. These programs...

We are obssessed with thinking and analyzing. NTs do not do this. Ever notice that it seems that NTs are walking around with their heads in the clouds and don't know what is going on around them? Both of my closest friends are obsessive self-analysers (they just do it different - I do it by running...

Danielismyname, I guess I know where you are coming from. I also have an issue with people who flaunt their "gloominess" and "disillusionment with life", dress in black just to show how low they are feeling, etc., and believe that there is something romanic and attractive about depression. Whenever ...
