Traits that have improved: Stimming (although it's more that I only stim in private now unless I am really anxious). I used to stim openly in the school playground, clapping my hands repeatedly and running around in circles. That soon got bullied out of me! General social skills such as tact and not...

I have problems guessing people's ages. One of my stock questions whenever someone is telling me about someone they know is "how old is she/he?" I never have anything to say once I hear the answer but it's just a routine question I ask. My husband doesn't get why I'm always asking it! Mayb...

I have no issues with talking with people I know well and like. When it comes to speaking with strangers, I have a "memory bank" of conversations that will get me through tasks such as ordering a takeaway or a taxi as long as the responses are the ones I have come across before. I hate using the tel...

The classifying of 25% makes no sense to me. Autism is wound into our lives and our personalities-it's not a definable part of us, in my opinion. She probably meant it as you only being mildly affected but trying to assign a percentage to it is just wrong. Also I personally hate it when people refer...

I have emotional episodes a lot of the time where I will cry for reasons which other people tell me are trivial. My major meltdowns are a lot rarer though. During my last meltdown, which was triggered by an abrasive colleague at work who had been stressing me out for almost a year, I dug my nails in...

My skin does not tolerate the sun well at all. I can burn within half an hour, even with Factor 30 sunscreen. The heat that comes with the sun makes me feel tired and ill if I am in it unprotected for longer than 20 minutes.

And one more question. I think I may have a form of PPD-NOS that is similar to AS, but I am not sure. Do people with AS tend to get strong irrational fears when they are young that they grow out of? I can't speak for anyone else but I had an irrational fear when I was a young child. I had a phobia ...

I am double jointed in one of my big toes but, other than that, I am not double jointed and I'm not hypermobile either. My knees used to dislocate randomly as a child-really, really painful particularly as it was always family members or friends who would pull it back into position rather than medic...

Forum: General Autism Discussion   Topic: How often should a child diagnosed with aspergers see Dr?

I saw the doctor who diagnosed me once a year from the ages of eight to eighteen. Then she stopped seeing me as she was a children's health professional and I had become an adult. She has since retired. Since the age of eighteen, I have not had any specialist doctor for my Aspergers even though the ...

I think the main one, from which all the other prejudices and assumptions stem, is assuming that they lack intelligence. I have met so many people who think that people with severe autism are incapable of knowing what they want or need. A lot of people also mistakenly think that, if someone cannot c...

I don't have kids yet but I think, if I did have kids and one or more of them ended up autistic, I would be able to help and support them, not only because I have Aspergers Syndrome myself but also because I have worked with children and teenagers on all levels of the spectrum for the past five year...

I'm not a fan of that attitude either. I belong to a lot of Aspergers groups on Facebook and, every day, there's usually at least one post talking about how boring neurotypical people are and how the post author considers themselves to be far superior to neurotypicals because of their special talent...

I have zero musical ability because I have no sense of rhythm at all (my music teachers at school used to despair of me!) but I do have a very good memory for the words of songs that I have heard. However I often mishear song lyrics and it takes me a while to realise the correct version. However, on...

This is something that really annoys me. As a female who struggles with Maths, Science and Computing, is very emotional and sensitive and is what most people would describe as an extrovert, I am a nightmare for people who stereotype Aspergers to an extreme degree :D However, these people don't see t...
