Lists help me stay organized and get things done, but I always forget to stick to making them! So, sort of.

Heck yes, I'd have been diagnosed. My parents knew something was wrong with me but none of the doctors they took me to in our little hick town knew what to tell them.

I have no trouble distinguishing left and right- I never mix them up. If I remember correctly, problems with that are part of dyscalculia...

I prefer to drive because there's almost never a reason to interact with someone else when you're in your car. I carry ear plugs in my purse all the time and if I have to take public transport I often use them. Music works too, especially since people can see that you've got headphones in and aren't...

What's exactly wrong with being ret*d? From where I'm sitting, I find the majority of people who have a normal IQ to be as stupid as anyone else. Wow, you can spell a whole heap of meaningless words and talk about a whole heap of meaningless stuff (which a normal IQ allows). That doesn't make you s...

It depends on the kid. All these things are decided on a case-by-case basis in most situations. Some autistic people have motor control problems, for example, and some people with Asperger's might be more severely autistic than someone with HFA.

Overstimulation is a huge issue for me. I had a rough day today in that respect, and realized that I don't have any coping mechanisms. When I shut down, I shut down, and that's it. I feel really icky right now and I don't know what to do about it other than sit in front of my computer in the dark in...

No normal kid learns to read at 18 months, doesn't smile until they're 5, and doesn't speak in full sentences until they're 6. That was my smoking gun. I may "cope well" with being autistic because I'm smart and I've worked really hard at appearing to be NT, but it's just an act. I've always known I...

I dislike using the phone because I'm hyperlexic- better at text and not very good at understanding speech.

I saw a guy at the mall the other day who was obviously autistic, but it was the look on his face ("OMFG get me out of here") and the fanny pack that gave him away. :D

Nonperson I agree that it can feel like a curse. I have the skills do any of the jobs I have had or want but thanks to the down side of AS the working world has been a living hell for me. I am as good or better than my peers in performing most tasks but I can only do it at 2/3 the speed or less the...

Yes. I always thought I was just bad at paying attention, but if someone shows me or writes it down I've got it in an instant. Lab classes are the WORST.

I don't think there's an aspie "look" other than somewhat expressionless, non-athletic, un-tanned, wearing comfortable clothes, maybe a bit unfashionable, with unstyled or quickly styled hair and practical shoes/accessories. Plus probably a lot of us have that 8O zoned-out look in busy public places...
