I chose the name as a reference to Laura in The Glass Menagerie , seeing as Laura obviously had some form of ASD, but I've had other members tell me they'd thought it was a reference to a novel whose name is escaping me at the moment ... The author's Tennessee Williams. That was the reference I had...

I used to tell people on a "need to know" basis. Immediate relatives, close friends, medical professionals. Then I had an ER nurse to whom I was trying to explain my panic attack demand I get my husband (1000 miles away) to come get the kids or she'd turn me into CPS. She acted like I'd said I was a...

Yeah, probably should have taken "It's private" to mean "No friendship." I think it was still kind of nasty to chuck you out of the restaurant. Paranoid 8O 8O

I'm from PA, but not close to Sunbury. There is a GRASP chapter that meets in Berwyn, PA that could be a good place for you to meet people. I realize Berwyn would be a heck of a drive, but they do have a listserv you could participate on, even if you can't make the meetings in person. If you'd like...

So what my friend envies-- and what other women hate-- isn't that I'm plain or that I don't fit the mold, but that I'm confident (or at least used to be)????? I guess that's it with the hair and make-up. It's not an NT thing or a society thing. It's a confidence thing. Maybe it's totally outside of ...

Willard-- Yeah, you said it just about exactly. I am the same person one week after diagnosis as I was one week before. I was the same person one week after self-diagnosis as I was one week before. It is not much. It is only a thread... ...a thread that runs through everything, touches everything, i...

I was depressed for years-- pretty much all of adolescence and into my 20s. A couple of years after I self-diagnosed, I decided that I wasn't defective, I was just different, and set about finding ways of getting along better with the NT world. The self-diagnosis made a lot of things make sense, and...

Interesting fact. As we were waiting for the diagnosis of autism from my psychiatrist (I was 13 when she said this), she told my Mum to buy women's magazines for me because it would 'help me act more normal'. How looking at close ups of cellulite, photoshopped 'perfect' bodies and diet advice would...

I have three kids. My oldest daughter is definitely NT, my son may or may not have mild Asperger's, and my younger daughter just turned 2 and is exceeding milestones, so I figure it's too soon to go there with her. I was not diagnosed until recently, but still knew I was on the spectrum. I wanted ma...

I don't exactly hate NT women, but I can't say I like them either. I have 4 friends of roughly my own age, 2 male and 2 female, and an NT husband. I suspect both males are on the spectrum somewhere. Of the 2 females, one is definitely NT and I'm undecided about the other. I like my NT friend (most o...

Hi. Finally got my diagnosis this month after more than 10 years of being a self-diagnosed Aspie. I'm trying to figure out, "What now??" The wonderful folks at therapy say this doesn't change anything-- and they're right. The only thing it changes is, I can no longer tell myself I might be wrong whe...
