I want my computer to turn off automatically after a specified amount of time. Does anyone know of a free app or simple way to do this? I had a google around, and tried a couple of apps, but they didn't do the job. One of them didn't do anything, and the other simply put it in standby mode, which isn't quite enough for me.

have you tried "scheduled tasks" in control panel? you can use the shutdown -s command and have it shut down at a specific time.

In scheduled tasks:
If you want to have it restart it should be shutdown.exe -r -f
If you want it to to shutdown it's shutdown.exe -s -f
The -f is a force command. It will force the computer to shut down even if there is non-responsive program running.
