for some reason when I am trying to play the pre-bundled VST's in reaper through the virtual keyboard or a MIDI controller, Reaper is detecting the key presses but it is not making any sound.

Do I need to install new VST's or am I not enabling them correctly? If so, where can I get free VST's how do I find the folder to put them in and finally how do I enable them?

If you want I can give you the new version of Reaper (4.33).

Hmm. I'm guessing you've done the following.
1. Options ---> Preferences ---> MIDI Devices ---> Device [xxx] Enable
2. Right click on left strip ---> Insert virtual instrument on new track --->Instruments ---> VSTi ReaSynth
3. Also, in the Preferences dialog box, I use ASIO4all so that's what I have as my driver.
