My thoughts on the issue. Windows 95 is the best

It seems too much like the later systems moved in a more flashy direction. They are full of features for Neurotypical users.

The older systems were designed more in line with spartan logic.

What are your thoughts?

GNU/Linux, of course.

It depends on the person, not all aspies/auties are alike. I don't think I'd know how to work a Linux. I could learn it, but I kind of like Mac. It's more visual. Well the one I used was. I use Windows Media Centre and it's ok.

Linux in modern times is very graphical, or it can be if you choose a graphical distro like Ubuntu or OpenSUSE. Actually, by now Linux is easier to use than Windows- it's just the initial set-up that can be tricky at times.

Too many are being bogged down with flashy graphics designed for new-comers to use without having to know commands and switches. Computers are getting faster, but with all the operating systems available it isn't easily noticed. Too many advanced features can kill it.

If you're fairly technically minded, there's a program called nLite which allows you to build a customised copy of various versions of Windows. You can remove a lot of "unnecessary" features that way.

^^^^OBVIOUSLY! BTW integrated or not, there was never a windows 95 O/S! It was a GUI. In any event, I HATE GUIs!

No, that would leave me stuck with CP/M. Or TYMTOS... DOS/360 perhaps.

But I've moved on - been through MS-DOS, Mac OS.

Windows NT stuck around for a while. Currently I run XP for work and easy home, and Ubuntu when I'm feeling brave. I daydream about comparing Windows 7 and Slackware on the Core i7 machine I haven't built yet.

I think you may also consider the OpenBSD and FreeBSD branch. An don't forget that Debian is planning to include the BSD-kernel into its distribution:

I hardly think an AS gives a rats arse as long as it works!

You drop a prompt infront of most people and they won;t have a clue.
Running BSD when all you use your computer for is photoshop is silly.

XP sp3 for the win.

Simple and fast. I run an "n-lite"'ned version of Windows 2000 on a five-year-old machine
which runs everything from Pixar's Typestry (1994) to Maya 6.5. No animated GUI effects = FAST.

Does anyone KNOW why Windows is the most popular OS on the market? Do they believe it's on many computers because it's the best, the fastest and better than bread itself?
I'd like to know why some manufacturers don't include Linux drivers on the CD.

aspies are stereotypically a very computer literate bunch, and there probably IS truth in that stereotype, so my answer is thus:

NOT VISTA....

vista adds a load of fool proof crap that annoys the computer literate, you put a CD in, a screen pops up saying "what do you want windows to do?" with a list filled with "play CD, copy CD, make some toast, show me some seizure inducing screen savers, blog this CD on myfacetwit, whatever".....I WANT WINDOWS TO DO NOTHING, JUST SIT THERE, UNTIL I GO TO "MY COMPUTER" CLICK ON THE CD ICON AND TELL YOU TO F***ING PLAY IT!

you click on a program icon and it says "are you sure you want windows to run this program?" YO MOTHERF***ER, I DOUBLE-CLICKED THAT ICON, OF COURSE I WANT TO F***ING RUN THE PROGRAM!

but at least it looks pretty i guess...

me, i miss amiga workbench...it looked ok, was perfectly functional and ran in about 1mb of memory...x
