What do you think are movie remakes that are better than or just as good as the original?

I just watched the original Last House On The Left, and I can honestly say, the remake was infinitely superior to that piece of sh*t.

by all accounts the 1983 remake of "1984" was superior to the 1956 version which was reportedly hated by the author's kin.

I have not seen any of them. Too depressing to watch. I've read it a few times, though.

The CIA's version of Animal Farm was excellent.

I prefer the 1969 True Grit if only because Charles Portis wrote the novel specifically with john wayne in mind.

Interesting pick. I've yet to see the remake. But I loved the original first movie. (Didn't care for the sequels. Especially Robocop 3 was terrible)

The 1978 version of Invasion of the Body Snatchers was pretty good.

Does the musical version of Little Shop of Horrors count as a remake?

I think it does, and I agree.

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Let Me In (2010)
Scarface (1983)
Ocean's Eleven (2001)

Don't get me wrong. I'm a fan of the original Robocop, but the remake took me entirely by surprise, especially with Michael Keaton and Gary Oldman giving great performances.

The 1979 version of Nosferatu is every bit the equal of the 1922 version, and even improves on it in some areas.

The 1941 version of The Maltese Falcon pretty easily surpasses the 1931 and 1936 versions.

Peter Jackson's King Kong remake is pretty good...

Cape Fear - in the 90s version Max Cady's threateningness is not only physical so becomes more threatening (instead of trying to run over hero's daughter with car, he tries to seduce daughter and lets her smoke)

The original is almost exclusively better than the remake.

If the original was, and even remains a favorite after remakes / sequels, I would be interested in news/reviews that thoughtfully compare originals with remakes; and even revisits the original. There have been awesome documentaries discussing original works (often before remakes).

Occasionally, I may view selected parts of remake (once it comes out on DVD); and I'm left yearning to see the original again!
