Interesting. I loved Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade mainly because it was perfectly fine with being imaginative and fun, unpretentious, and generally great entertainment--with a beautiful John Williams soundtrack.
Yes, they took 1930s-1940s serials and played them for laughs.
I wish they hadn't swapped the engine on that 1916(?) Saxon automobile to make a prop out of it, though--a Saxon is a rare car; also, blowing up the Model T Ford touring car that Sallah borrows from his relatives is a bit unfortunate (but amusing.)
