How do you generally frame the idea of a life career? Beginning, middle, end?

I think one reason it might be hard to frame is that the era of "lifelong careers" is pretty much over. Aren't most adults now having multiple careers over a lifetime? It's hard for me because I want to have just one career and stick to it, but apparently that's difficult to do now.
