I haven't really played all that many Mario games besides the original 2D ones, but I did very much like Yoshi's Island and Paper Mario. Both of them are among my favorite games for their respective consoles.

I've never been much of a fan of the 3D Mario games so my favorite is still Super Mario World

Super mario 64 for nostalgia. Super mario bros. 3 because I think its the best designed one with the most variation and ways to go through levels.

I like Super Mario Bros. 2, even though it was sort of a bootleg, hackjob, spinoff or whatever people want to call it. After all, it introduced us to the phenomenon of bombs with legs, running around with the fuses lit.

depends on whether you count spin-offs or not...

platformer: Super Mario All-Stars ( I don't care if it's cheating )
3D: Super Mario 64
RPG: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Kart: Mario Kart Wii
sports: Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
overall: Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
spin-off: Wario Land 3

special mention: Mario Paint

I haven't played many of the newer games, but I loved Super Mario World and Mario 64. Mario 64 was one of those early games that gave me a big, open world (for the day and age) to roam in. I used to play Mario Party with a few friends when I was young.

Super Mario Bros 3 is the best 2D game.
Though New Super Mario Bros U + NSLU together are a close second.

As for the 3D games it's a tie between Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Super Mario 3D World.

Handheld is Super Mario 3D Land.

Kart: Mario Kart 8
Sports: Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (GC)
Party: Mario Party 1
Mario RPG: M&L BiS (DS)

I can't decide between the first 3 Paper Marios and first 3 3D ones.

Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES is one of my favorite games ever, so I think that probably also makes it my favorite Mario game.

Well, Doki! Doki! Panic was originally going to be a Mario game, so in a roundabout way, it's kind of sort of official...

Super Mario World, mainly for sentimental reasons as it's one of the very first video games I ever played. I'm actually not a terribly huge fan of the Mario series to be honest though. I'm more into Nintendo's other franchises like Zelda, StarFox, and Metroid.

I'm considering just the main platformers here:
Super Mario World is my favorite because of the diversity of the world/stages and the amount of secrets (one the best part of mario games for me).
The second ones on the list are Super Mario Bros 3 and New Super Mario Bros U.

I would have to say that Super Mario Bros. is my favorite game that I've played, and has gotten me into gaming.

new super mario bros wii came included with my red wii, took me five months to finish it but i did enjoy those five months! got all 5 stars on my file but, not the shiny variety.

as i am a relative infant, i never got the chance to play SMW until it came out on the wii virtual console. :? (oldest console i have is a gcn, plus a ps1 i had as a kid that had only one game and no longer own)

and yes, the secrets packed in it are wonderful. :)

I really like SMB3. It was diverse, and the airship levels were fun.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is my favourite Mario RPG. It was an inventive game.

The only 3D Mario platformer I've played is Mario 64, on DS. I enjoyed it while I was playing it, but I don't particularly plan on returning to it.

I think the best Mario series is the one involving Karts. I often find myself playing Mario Karts 64 whenever I'm interacting with my siblings at my parent's house. I always choose Wario, on Rainbow Road, in Reverse Mode. Good times.

The very first game in the series is always my choice.
