I have heard that the Wii will play Gamecube games via backward compatibility, but are there any additional devices/converters needed to play Gamecube games on the Wii?

No. You can just slide them right in, and it will play it. I play GCN games on my Wii sometimes, and it works just as if it were a GCN.

The Wii's hardware is similar enough to the GameCube's that it works without emulation.
However, no Game Boy Player or anything else that used the expansion port.
Oh, and running in GameCube mode means that any Wii features are disabled. This automatically disconnects all Wiimotes.
