One thing I found very interesting is there seems to be a lot of hate towards the grass starters, particularly Chikorita. Kind of sad, because I actually happen to like quite a few of them...

Mine is already painfully obvious, but I'm curious to hear yours.

Mine would be Cyndaquil, it is adorkable and cool.

Also Typhlosion is the volcano Pokémon and a honey badger, so you know it does not give a sh!$.

If I had to pick one of the main starters ( IE pick from fire, grass & water types ), I'd say Charmander ( gotta have my Charizard! )...

But my favorite starter is also my favorite Pokemon period: Pikachu!

I actually almost always choose the grass type. The reason is half preference, and half tactical.

As for tactical... Out of the 3 sterter elements, the games have generally had the most of water types, and the least of fire types. So the rock-paper-scissors element of the game actually seems to favor grass as the most useful starter type, since it beats the large amount of water types you encounter, while only being weak against the relatively few fire types you find.

As for preference... It also seems harder to find strong and cool looking high-level grass type Pokemon than it does for water and fire. I figure I'll usually find something fire and water along the way, usually that end up being cooler/stronger than the starter ones anyway. I rarely find a better replacement for the starter grass type though.

I chose Turtwig as my favorite in the poll. Grass+Ground was such a cool combination, and Torterra was just plain awesome looking.

I wish we could start with Mew. I love Mew. I loved Pokemon Yellow because it started trainers off with Pikachu. I love Pikachu, too. :D

I found myself starting with Bulbasaur most of the time with the old games, then Totodile with the next generation ones.

Oddly enough, I can do very well with any one of them as a starter.

Picked Cyndaquil. Not only cute, but looks awesome especially after evolving.

I can't choose between Squirtle and Turtwig. I also like Bulbasaur a lot. Cyndaquil is really cute too.
Treecko and Froakie are nice too and Fennekin is beautiful. As is Snivy.

?? But Chikorita was so cute, and one of very few Pokemon who stayed so after evolving. Why would anyone hate her??

I really don't like how Squirtle and Turtwig evolve! Too bad I have to evolve them to make them stronger. I wish there was something you could give them so they could stay basic Pokemon while gaining strength as though they evolved.

I only know the first and second generation. I found Squirtle to be the most effective starter Pokemon out of all 6. I barely needed any other Pokemon when I picked Squirtle. I even tried to do an entire Pokemon blue run just with Squirtle and I got all the way to the Elite four (only used other Pokemon for HM parts).

Yes, that is indeed why Cyndaquil is so great.
I want one in the new game.

I believe further would require a lot of elixirs?

That wasn't much of an issue. IIRC some of them had Pokemon that had super effective attacks + confusion I think? It's been a while.

Oh, the attacks that cause confusion are dreadful. As long as it's my Pokemon getting confused that is. It seemed to me that attacks causing confusion made my Pokemon confused far more often than when my Pokemon used those attacks. It also seemed like my Pokemon "hurt themselves in their confusion" far more often than the Pokemon I fought did.

While paralysis seemed to work more evenly.

I love all of the starters, but there was something so special about the first few generations that they've lost.

I tend to like fire pokemon in general. I just think they are cool. Probably because so many of them are based on mythological creatures (a special interest of mine)
Ex:
Ninetails and Vulpix: Kitsune, a Japanese spirit
Arcanine: Shisa, or Foo Dog, an a protective Asian creature
Rapidash: Unicorn
Charizard: Dragon

Naturally my favorite starter is charmander, because then I get Charizard!
DRAGON! I think I've said enough.
