The concept that art is concerned primarily with beauty is one of the more gross mistakes of someone unfamiliar with the field.
What is art concerned with primarily?

It depends upon which viewpoint you take. For the artist it is, like any other form of art such as creative writing, dance, drama, architecture, film, music, etc. an exploration of form, content, materials, emotion, attitude, perception, comprehension of reality and probably a few more things. It tests limits in all these directions and tries to discover novel approaches and new understandings. It is an adventure that might produce beauty, ugliness, horror, delight, examination of basic skills and much more.
The commercial side of art is involved with monetary value and is altogether different from the artist's point of view. The viewer's point of view is also very different and varies for each viewer and his or her sophistication and personal preferences.
