Jacques Ellul (1912 - 1994) was a French Christian anarchist and sociologist. He argued that Certain types of technology cause psychological problems and that technology has replaced God as what is sacred.

Does anyone here agree with anything Jacques Ellul said?

I'm somewhat familiar with him. Aside from his influences on the Unabomber, I think he made some good points about technology. I wouldn't say technology has replaced God in terms of what is sacred, though I think it has replaced God as the only means of salvation.

My gratitude for the initial presentation. Concise intro with accessible videos for those who may is very gladly received.

I had heard of Ellul, know nothing about him. Partdon me while I mine a few data .....

Fascinating ethnic heritage.

Heavy conversion story.

Opinions as described - some of them not too far from mine, but generally more extreme and very different in style.

I tend to doubt his assumed contrarianism as seen in th Wikipedia note. The guy is clearly an ennea-8 - an intelligent high-power specimen. I have worked closely and long-term with two just such [differently focussed, of course].

I am inclined to find a piece of his to check him out more thoroughly - interesting guy.

For your question - that Western techno society is inimical to Christian life in particular and to human life in general, who can doubt it? We are the rats who have fouled our nest.

But that technology has replacd God? If that is in fact his claim, I say no. The lab-coated classes have taken over the societal role of the priests, but they are sacrificing to Paul's "Unknown God"
