Do you think the status quo should stay the same and that the People's Republic of China should stay in the U.N., or should Taiwan be reinstated?

It might be politically infeasible, but I think that both should be UN members.

Both. But if there can only be one, I'd prefer Taiwan.

Clearly the mainland government "represents" the bulk of the Chinese people.

Ideally both should be in. I'd prefer that Taiwan was in. But pragmatically, China should be in.

One can complain all one likes about the regime in Beijing. But the fact remains that this regime represents one-sixth of the population of the globe, the second largest economy on the planet, and it is the most potent military force in Asia.

You can no longer have the United Nations without the People's Republic of China.

Now, admission of Taiwan is certainly desirable, but the PRC holds the trump cards, and if we are stuck with only one or the other, I cannot allow sentimental favouratism towards a democracy to eclipse the inescapable reality of the PRC's power.

The Republic of China needs to stop claiming mainland China, Mongolia and parts of a dozen other countries before they will be admitted. They should go for Taiwan independence imho, and be admitted to the UN as the Republic of Taiwan.

Both, ideally. However, mainland China has priority.

The PRC is the second largest economy, and set to become the largest economy.

I don't see how you can possibly exclude it.

That said I think Taiwan has a right to have its sovereignty respected, so ideally both countries should be there.
