Here is a documentary about Burkina Faso under the Socialist Thomas Sankara.

You don't hear it mentioned often, probably because the people seemed to enjoy a comparitive state of improved living as compared to during French domination.

First and foremost-

*He elevated the people out of complete poverty and enabled communities to become self sufficient.

*He led successful boycotts against wealthy foreign nations to the benefit of Burkina Faso industry and business.

*It was the first African nation to raise the issue of women's right and to elevate their status and political efficacy to that of men.

* He was eventually disposed by a former friend and political rival who happened to be a French puppet. His government is still in power to this day.

The man was an absolute diamond of a stateman. His death is one of the African tragedies of the later part of the last century.

It probably isn't too difficult to do a better job than the French at running a country. Still, besides the positive accomplishments, there's:

Wikipedia wrote:
In order to achieve this radical transformation of society, he increasingly exerted authoritarian control over the nation, eventually banning unions and a free press, which he believed could stand in the way of his plans. (...) Sankara's régime was criticised by Amnesty International and other international humanitarian organisations for violations of human rights, including extrajudicial executions, arbitrary detentions and torture of political opponents. The British development organisation Oxfam recorded the arrest and torture of trade union leaders in 1987. In 1984, seven individuals associated with the previous régime were accused of treason and executed after a summary trial.

No free press. Arrests, torture, murder. Oh well, if you want to make an omelette, you've got to break a few eggs, right?

if you want to reduce his administration to a balance sheet, You'll find the positive far and away outweighs the negative.

These leaders are far more deserving of praise and attention. But I doubt communists will find much validation in their views by looking at such individuals.

In your opinion.

There is no validation in being the first african state to grant equality to women?

Considering Sankara died in 1987, that rather offset his chances of being nominated.
