during the last major shutdown in the 90s, I was a civil servant but lucked out due to being considered "essential personnel" at the hospital I worked at. i wonder how it will work this time?

You were right. It was worse than a scare tactic. I'm still not afraid though.
I've never lived through this sort of thing so what can I expect that I should be afraid of aside from the usual idea of anarchists going crazy with joy which may or may not happen?

the ball already dropped at 12:01 EST, and it is bouncing on our heads lightly so far but will get worse when the next thing happens.

You said there was a major shutdown in the 90s, correct? That reminds me. I've spent most of my childhood staring off into space. People asked me why? I had no answer. Looking at the bullying I went through then to the world I live in now? I'm staring off into space more than ever. Now I know. With outside unknown forces having killed my dreams, making me into a college dropout to avoid tuition interfering with our rainy day fund, paid in social security, living with my parents (a carpet cleaning father and an accountant mother), a middle brother who's working with a job helping my dad, a youngest brother who's in high school now, 2 cats, a dog, a nice two sided home with neighbors in quiet suburb with a couple old relatives of mine living across the street surrounded by lots of farmland several miles north of the nearest city, and not caring if I'm a deadbeat loser because of this.

How much of this can a government shutdown take from me? How long will it take before some or all of it is gone assuming the government does not start back up?

And if they do, you're going to see the biggest mass riot the world has ever seen. The dissolution of the Soviet Union will be small potatoes compared to the jackasses that even try to take the money that we, the people, paid into federal entitlement programs. FDR, JFK and LBJ, must be rotating in their graves right now on how the extremists on both sides of the aisle in both chambers of Congress (or should I say, regress), as well as the White House, are building walls around their respective institutions.
