He doesn't like northern propaganda, historians or Marxism. He's upset because, while he admits slavery was ugly, the movie doesn't show the other side of that coin. He doesn't provide any examples.

Living in one of the most Conservative States in the country, I would have to say that, yes, they are pretty much all backwoods bigots and regressives who would love nothing better than to turn the world clock back 50 years to the good old days, but don't think they are going to give up their 21st century technology. ( as much as they despise the science that spawned their toys)

He appears to be on the far right fringes, and thus, is not your typical conservative.

I must have read it too fast because I didnt see where he condoned slavery. Since Bowman was not around during the antebellum era I don't know where he would have gotten the idea that the movie was propaganda.
Very few conservatives condone slavery. The few that do don't number enough to matter.

even bringing up the topic of "good slave masters" is a tacit approval.

I think it's safe to say that they mean good only in a comparative sense.

He is a "resident scholar" at the Ethics and Public Policy Center

http://www.eppc.org/

In what Universe does this fellow not represent modern American conservatism?

I think "American Conservatism" has become such and ambiguous term that no one group of people any longer define it, and the ones who claim title to it are so far extreme right that even their Conservative idols/heros would not walk into the same 2000 stall bathroom with them.

Slavery is still alive and well.

The only thing thats different is that the whip has been replaced by the threat of the landlord's eviction letter.

Anyone who does not think racism is still raging in North America need only visit the Craigslist rants/raves section of any large urban area in a Conservative dictated State. I have had my life threatened online in forums and viaq email for merely supporting Obamas run against Romney, and I did not vote for Obama either time.

Thomas, sorry, that's just not ok. As horrific as the current economic paradigm is (I'm a socialist, I agree with you that it's horrific), comparing it to slavery is belittling the horrific enormity of what slavery was. Being evicted from your home is not as bad as seeing your children sold in front of your very eyes. Not having work, or being paid too little, or being taxed too much, is not as bad as being forced to work at a job that you hate, for people that you hate, and having no option of quitting short of suicide.

If anything, '12 years a slave' showed the average experiences, not the worst that it could get.

Hahaha yes, tell us about all the good parts of slavery.
