Wasn't this thread about legal rights? On that subject, I find it interesting that, at least here in Alberta, married couples have restricted rights when it comes to claiming insurance and pensions.

Where homosexual marriage is legal, homosexual couples should be granted the same rights/priveleges as heterosexual couples [although granting rights and priveleges for getting married seems iffy to me].

Gay people are already getting married, are they not? I think sexual promiscuity is bad, be it gay or hetero. Responsible sex, on the other hand, in the context of a loving relationship, is a a beautiful thing. Since I myself lost my virginity outside of marriage, I don't feel I'm in any position to lecture on sexual purity.

I may believe in the Bible, but many do not. For many, the Word of God means absolutely nothing. I may feel irritation and revulsion at some homosexuals some of the time, but I consider it a personal duty to show respect. I may not be comfortable with the idea of leather bars or drag-shows or fisting, but that's just me. As an individual I'm allowed to have likes and dislikes. I'm allowed to be disgusted or sickened at certain things, but I don't feel I am entitled to express hatred or bigotry. Sure, I may think all kinds of things, but when it comes to words and deeds I am actualy too chickensh*t to commit any hate crimes. I wouldn't dare utter hate speech or persecute anyone unjustly. You see, my conscience gets in the way .....

That's really sick, man. If you had aids and were bleeding on the ground, I would definitely try to save your life, even if I do think that you're a backwards bigot.

conform to those same standards.

Or we could all stop behaving like backwards rednecks and simply be tolerant of those different from us, since it really doesn't effect us.

That's a pretty slippery slope, my friend, to group-think and conformity. Let's try to move forward, shall we?

Your very welcome!

The truth of the matter is you can real all four gospels a thousand times over and you will never see homosexuality mentioned even once. The only serious anti-homosexual statement in the bible is found in the book of Leviticus... which also forbids wearing clothing of more than one type of fabric (you have an elastic band in your underwear? Your going to Hell!). I am a Christian because I follow the words of Christ, not a set arbitrary rules laid down because people 6 thousand years ago needed them to understand salvation.

As a Christian I don't think I should be obssessed with gay people or preoccupy myself with defeating the gay agenda. Yes, gay marriage and gays rights are a complex issue. If there's a final solution I don't know what it is. And I don't care to find one. Frankly, this whole issue has my head spinning.

What is a gay lifestyle? I'm gay, and I don't think I've managed to have a gay lifestyle. Could someone please tell me how one can have a gay lifestyle? Is there a straight lifestyle?

Now really, how is it 'special' rights? It's equal rights. I want to be able to marry who I want. The sex of my partner is entirely irrelevant. Marriage is a contract with the state. It is purely sexist and heterosexist to tell me who I can marry and who I cannot. If it's two consenting adults, why does it matter what genitalia we have?

Also, I don't care about the religious end of it. Marriage is a civil contract. Marriage in the religious way is up to the individuals and their church. If their church is okay with it, then they can have a ceremony. Otherwise not. The gay rights issue is not one about religion, it is about civil rights.

You winge about you government using your taxes to support gay people. Do you realise that (i presume you are from USA) your taxes being used to support religious groups flys directly in the face of what your founding fathers and especially Jefferson wanted. So try and be good christians and stop being soooo judgemental and hateful.

God created murderers too. Christ's f*****g sake people, some people place a negative value on some things that you place a negative or positive value on. I'm getting sick of people presenting arguments they think will demonstrate that one *has* to be tolerant. Well, s**t let's throw out the whole idea of being able to assign a value to the life and behavior and ideals of others. I mean, excluding my tendency to go on rants like this on line, I probably don't count as much of a heterosexist, but people digging their heels in on the gay-rights issue is completely a product of current trend shifts. 90% of people couldn't form an original opinion on the subject or its relation to moral philosophy if their life depended on it.

you're right that was a rant. Please dont accuse me of not being able to form an original opinion or of being tolerant because of a current trend. I have fought against oppression since I was a kid and I take offence at your suggestion that I am in some way being trendy. I happen to have a gay step daughter that has had a s**t of a time because of discrimination. For some reason people seem to think she is the devil incarnate because she is in a loving relationship. Before you charge people for being 'trendy' check out the arguements and put together an informed opinion

A caring atheist would be worth a pillar of Lot's wife's salt in the eyes of God.

Also, I couldn't care less about the wants of the founding fathers.

I find this argument stupid, to be honest. The "Where is it in the bible?" is devoid of reason. It reminds me of Evangelical antics on which the only way to find an answer is to flip randomly the pages of a KJVB. There are many things Jesus never spoke about, does that mean it is allowed? Such thinking would go against the conscious.

Is it possible to be a serious Christian and avoid being some sort of bigot or a homophobe? By "serious" I mean "retaining Christian values." I tend to agree with Oscuria in that homosexuals as human beings shoud not be condemned for who they are but rather for what they do. Personally I don't like the idea of homosexuality but that's different from dealing with other people face-to-face.

Then why should I follow God? Your god, to put it nicely, sounds like a huge jerk if he thinks the only thing worth anything is people padding his ego. I'm a pillar of salt? He's a fictional character. I guess we're even. Really though, even if we assume he is real, why should I follow a god that is so immoral? I would not kill someone for not believing in me.

Also, your god does not make the laws in the US. This is not a theocracy.

I don't see how homosexuality runs contrary to Christianity. There are several denominations that gladly accept homosexuals. Not this weird guilt trippish 'accept the person, but not who they are' stuff. I mean, is it really accepting someone if you condemn their love? Anyway, Christianity need not by definition be homophobic.

Also, could you list the Christian values you're talking about? I want to know specifically what you're talking about so I can understand your point of view better.

a) Yes.
b) What the heck are you talking about? Why even ask the question?

I skipped most of the thread, and since I've already ranted a couple of times recently about the loaded word "homophobe", I'll leave that bit alone.

The thrust of my argument was that yours was badly formed. If you're going to defend gay rights, you should do it better.
