Well, atheist or not, if you hate religious people, you've still got to live with them, and you'll never turn all of them into committed atheists.

Tolerance is one of the guiding principles of liberal society (i.e., you have your beliefs, and I have mine, but we can still get along). Vocally expressing your hatred violates that.

I think you need Ghandi sir. Ghandi, without religion, was an example of tolerance, and virtue. His ways should be the ways of our society. And he was killed by an angry religious man...

umm, no? He was tolerant of religions, and may have been religious at one point even.. But he was not devoted to any one religion.

Not to any one particular religion, no. But he was deeply spiritual.

He was Hindu, wasn't he? I saw the movie with Sir Ben Kingsley and it portrayed him as Hindu.

That's interesting. How can one be a Christiana and a Jew? The basic premises of Christianity and Judaism contradict each other.

Moreso do the basic tenets of Christianity and Islam contradict each other. And any of the Abrahamic faiths has serious problems with Hinduism. I didn't say his theology was correct, but he did take somewhat of a universalist view to religion.

This statement makes much more sense from a common Eastern perspective on religion.

I have a Chinese friend who said he's "buying the Jesus insurance" and "buying the Buddha insurance" (something like Pascal's wager).

It sounded strange at first, but I really learned a lot about the Indic / Chinese attitude towards religion when he said that.

Yes, but having the Buddhist insurance invalidates the Jesus insurance policy.

I think you completely misunderstood Ghandi then... he was practicing tolerance of religion, and at the same time testing the tolerance of others.. He wanted you to see it for what it really was, and what it should be.

In response to Ishmaels acertation that he "hates" religion. Are you certain that it is religion that you "hate" or could it be rather, elements or things about religion that you dislike or disagree with? This is important because generalizing seldomly leads us to certainty. As an example, when a person says that "I do not like that person". Is it the person, or that persons actions or beliefs that they do not like?
