Oh, and the bombs didn't have to be dropped. Japan was going to fall anyway. It was just America's way of thumping her chest and saying "I'm so big and strong!" I think the only reason that Tokyo wasn't nuked, was that if was, there would be no Japanese authority to surrender.

The Japanese weren't about to surrender. We were facing a bloodbath on the mainland, where our troops would have been forced to gun down men, women, and children as they fought house to house. It would have been a long and bloody occupation.

I do also. The Japanese are a very sophisticated people and their sense of beauty is deeper than that found in the West. I bear no ill will to the current generation of Japanese who were born since the war ended. They did not choose their parents.

It is toward their parents and grandparents I bear ill will. That wretched generation venerated and Emperor who appointed moral imbisciles to determine the foreign policy of Japan, which at the time was to loot the raw materials of its neighbors. The Japanese from 1920 to 1945 behaved very badly. They raped China. They butchered the populations of the nations they conquered. They made aggressive unjustified war.

By some miracle, the current generation of Japanese (to their great credit) have forsworn war and make their way in the world by peaceful commerce. More power to them! Getting nuked scared them straight.

With current medical technology plus the magic of Hollywood, all of it is possible.

Do you know the difference between reality and the verisimilitude of reality?

But to plunder a bit our western tradition - The story that Athena was born out of Zeus's head in full amour has its qualities for its very own too:

Surely the Greeks had no technology to compare with ours but the symbolic creation of Athena from the mind of Zeus is equivalent to the posts about the creation of a robogod which is treated humorously here. If artificial intelligence ever really gets going and creates intellect vastly superior to current human intelligence a real Robogod may result.

But to defend those myths they have also quite reasonable aspects: Athena is said to abolish revenge and replaced it through law, court and justice. Later this has be set into the Oresteia of Aeschylus - a play which is ,with good reason, still performed and read:
