Or they live in countries that are prone to this kind of natural disaster.

We don't generally end up with earthquakes in the British Isles and for that we should be grateful.

And so is yours.
Anyway it is true, if you live in an area that is prone to disasters, there will be disasters is pretty obvious.

It's incredibly sad.
As some of you know, an exchange student from Japan lives with me, and I'm at home from school with her today and we've been watching the news all day. She doesn't want to call her parents for fear of becoming homesick, but they live in Sapporo, Hokkaido, which has only experienced mild aftershocks. She does, however, have friends and family in and around Tokyo. My thoughts are with them today.

The Pacific coast is expecting that tsunami, but I've far enough inland and have high ground between me and the coast, so I'll be fine.

In any case the waves should not exceed 2 meters over normal height.

It looks like British Columbia's under a tsunami watch now too. They say Vancouver, Victoria and the eastern half of Vancouver Island shouldn't be affected-- but if you live on the wastern side of the island, or on the coast north of the island, you are advised to stay away from the beaches and refrain from boating.

I think they are acting on the side of caution which is probably a good idea.

Tsunami warnings, watches, and advisories are stretching
from AK, through BC, WA, OR, all the way to So. CA.

After the NZ quake and seeing images of this one, it is very sobering.

My thoughts are with the people of Japan and that they recover from this fast.

Im up, though I didnt get much sleep last night. Even though I am not in Christchurch, that quake scared me and now I am even more scared by the Japan Quake...

I met 3 really awesome Japanese girls when I was travelling through Europe. I hope they are ok. :(

For those who are living in Pacific Coastal areas, dont become complacent about tsunamis because we are not out of the woods yet.

So in other words, New Zealand's warning has been lifted overnight, but is now reinstated again for a while...

They have just reported at least 200-300 bodies found on beach near Sendai, Miyagi Japan have washed up. Japan is getting aftershocks of 6.0 or larger.

I have heard from my co-worker its in the 1000s now.

I am still feeling aftershocks. Take a look at the number of 5.0+ earthquakes. I stopped counting at 50.

I eventually got home, but it took 3 hours and I had to get a ride from a different station from my family.
I am so on edge, I can't relax to sleep.

First the quake in New Zealand, now this...
My thoughts and prayers go out to those affected by the tragedy. It's just a pity that we humans only seem to care about others after a disaster like this occurs. When things are going well, all we can do is find differences in each other and reasons for arguments. :(

Japan is a very mountainous country. They don't exactly have a choice, you know. You can't build in most mountainous areas due to the significant risk of landslides, when it rains excessively, which it indeed does quite often in Japan. As such, there are almost no appropriate areas where the Japanese can live. Where do you suggest they live?

This is absolutely awful, simply devastating. I am so sorry and sending all my best to the people of beautiful Japan. I was fortunate to have gone on holidays to the country a few years ago and am scheduled to go again this October. My destination is supposed to be to the quieter northern part of the country with a couple of days to be spent in Sendai. I don't know now what will come of it.

So many lives lost. They are in my thoughts.

It's quite a disaster to behold. Caught this on the web late last night and have been keeping tabs on the news all day. The photos and videos are incredible.

I expect the death toll to in the thousands from this, possibly more with many more never found. People in the coastal areas only had 10 minutes or less after the initial quake to evacuate before the tsunami hit. Doubtless many were not able to get away in time.

I feel for you Japan.
