A US soldier was today sentenced to life in prison for the rape of 14-year-old Iraqi girl who was then murdered and her body set on fire, and the killing of her entire family.
Specialist James Barker Barker, 23, who pleaded guilty yesterday as part of a plea bargain, was one of five soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division accused in the March 12 killings near the town of Mahmudiyah south of Baghdad.
"Specialist Barker was sentenced to life with the possibility of parole,'' said Major Mary Constantino, a spokeswoman at Fort Campbell, Kentucky where the proceedings were held.
Lieutenant Colonel Richard Anderson, the military judge who handed down the sentence, said Barker's sentence would not exceed 90 years.
Barker plead guilty to charges of murder, rape, conspiracy to commit murder and rape, obstruction of justice, violating a general order, arson and housebreaking, Maj Constantino said.
As part of the plea bargain, he agreed to testify against the other soldiers who took part in the crime.
The soldiers are alleged to have broken into a house where they raped the 14-year-old girl.
The girl's mother, father and six-year-old sister were killed in another room, and then the 14-year-old was killed and her body set on fire.
The victims were identified as 14-year-old Abeer Kassem Hamza al-Janabi, six-year-old Hadeel Kassem Hamza al-Janabi, their father Kassem Hamza Rachid al-Janabi and mother Fakhriya Taha Mohsine al-Janabi.
Prosecutors alleged that the soldiers plotted to rape Abeer after seing her on the street.
"They gathered together over cards and booze and came up with a plan to rape and murder that little girl,'' Captain Alex Picklands said at a military hearing in Iraq.
One of the five soldiers, Steven Green, was dishonourably discharged in May with a "personality disorder'' and was arrested by the FBI on June 30.
He appeared at a court in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 2 to face rape and murder charges and faces the death penalty if convicted.
Three other soldiers in the case have yet to enter pleas.
The case stood out because of the gruesome sexual nature of the crime, but it is just one of a series in which US troops have been accused of killing civilians in Iraq.
The military has yet to file charges in the most high profile of the cases - allegations that marines killed 24 civilians in the town of Haditha after one of their comrades went on a rampage.
That case is still under investigation.
