Reality is being weird again. In a nutshell: an abandoned Russian cruise ship infested with rats was seized by Canadian authorities years ago, who eventually let it loose in international waters. Now the ship and its rat population, who must be munching on each other by now, is floating off the coast of Scotland and ready to crash ashore. Sounds like the beginning of a cheap horror movie.

Surely all of the rats must be dead by now.

Rats are predatory omnivores (just like humans) who are known to turn cannibalistic when food gets scarce (just like humans). But I have to agree that the presence of surviving rats on the ship is purely hypothetical after all this time.

Put Justin Beiber on board. Then send both him, and the ship, back to Canada.

The Smithsonian also points out that the rats may or may not exist (Schrödinger's rats... heh) and refutes the reports that the ship has been sighted off the Scottish coast:

I thought Gawker was a trustworthy information source, but apparently they too have jumped onto the bandwagon of parroting internet rumors without bothering to fact-check them first. So the ship exists, but it has not been recently sighted, and there may not be any rats aboard.

From the makers of Sharknado and Attack of the Flying Piranhas....

It's really the perfect premise for a B-movie. I mean, this kind of environment would put a huge amount of selective pressure on a rat population, resulting in rapid evolutionary changes towards bigger and badder rats :) Considering the short lifespan and the high reproductive rate of Rattus norvegicus, a breed of bloodthirsty killer rats the size of terriers almost seems like a real possibility after a couple of years.

PLEASE don't send Bieber back to Canada, I'd rather have the cannibalistic rats to deal with! 8O
Of course, if he stayed in Canada or any other country besides the States he'd be an utter failure by now, as he should be. :x

its not going to crash into the shore its worth too much for that to happen
theres a huge amount of scrappers trying to find the ship because its worth over a million dollars in scrap metal

Someone is going to take this news story and write a horror movie script about humans getting on board the ship, then being eaten alive by rats - then claim it's based on a true story.

Agree that this sounds like a plot for a horror movie.

There was a made-for-TV drama about a haunted abandoned luxery liner roaming the North Atlantic, and being discovered by a hapless boarding party checking it out (one poor guy gets lured to falling to his death by the ghost of a seductive lady in an evening gown). No rats as I recall. But it was rather awful. Cant remember the name of it.

Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, and a boatload of cannibal rats are adrift in the northern Atlantic ...

There's a joke in there, somewhere.
