They are saying that Nicky Reilly has schizophrenia, other sources say he is mildly ret*d.

An ex-neighbor of mine who had schizophrenia, believed himself to be Yasser Arafat and wore a tea towel on his head for several months, so it is possible Mr. Reilly devloped a delusion that he was a Muslim terrorist and acted his fantacy out. Though, collecting model James Bond cars, no friends, not talking to people, obsessions, "naive and easily lead"..., that does not sound like schizophrenia but a misdiagnosis. Its also said he tried to commit suicide several times.

"He always used to say that he had been told you will get a better life when you die if you are a Muslim." - Sounds like a very literal interpretation.

Here is another article that describes his metal heath:

And here is a picture of Mr Reilly:

He seems to have been fed the "72 virgins" story.

Not unheard of as a plan. The mentally ill have been used as human bombs by islamist groups in other countries.. I believe Downs Syndrome was mentioned...

News just in - the bomb contained "chemicals"

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7416642.stm

"People living near the Mr Reilly's Plymouth home, where he has lived with his family for many years, have described him as a "big friendly giant" who was "obsessed" with computers."

We also know he collected James Bond model cars.

They are now saying that Mr. Reilly has Asperger's syndrome, as I suspected.

"Senior police sources said that the alleged corruption of a vulnerable young man - who suffered from Asperger's Syndrome."

"A friend of Mr Reilly said he suffered from Asperger's - a form of autism - and tried to commit suicide after problems with his girlfriend in his late teens . He was sectioned, and after being released from a mental hospital he was allegedly groomed by a group of radicals. "

I find this very upsetting.

It is upsetting, though at the same time not particularly surprising considering the fact that Islamic insurgents in Iraq had no problems with turning people with Down's Syndrome into suicide bombers either.
