Iowa man faces charges after hugging officer

Quote:
IOWA CITY, Iowa - A hug has landed an Iowa City man in hot water. An Iowa City man who thought a police officer just "needed a hug" faces several charges including assault on a peace officer and public intoxication.

Police said a 21-year-old man was arrested on Saturday. According to police records, the man ran up to the officer and stuck out his arms.

The officer told him to "get away," but the man didn't take the hint and embraced the officer.

When the officer told the man to put his hands behind his head, he refused. He was then handcuffed.

It must be nice to have so little real crime that police actually have time to press charges against someone for being touchy-feely.

I wish we had that problem where I live.

Same here. Even saying 'Hello' or 'Good Morning' can earn you a reprimand for harassment.

I think it's sad that they made such a big deal. So what if it made the officer a little uncomfortable. There could not have been any real harm in it. We've gone a little overboard as a society, I think. A very cold shrug off would have done the trick.

I could actually see my son doing something like this someday, offerring an out-of-place hug. He has trouble with boundaries. He's a little naive, but he's not a criminal.

"Love Potion Number Nine"
by Leiber / Stoller

(Performed by The Clovers, and The Searchers)

I took my troubles down to Madame Rue
You know that gypsy with the gold-capped tooth
She's got a pad down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
Sellin' little bottles of Love Potion Number Nine

I told her that I was a flop with chics
I've been this way since 1956
She looked at my palm and she made a magic sign
She said "What you need is Love Potion Number Nine"

She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink

I didn't know if it was day or night
I started kissin' everything in sight
But when I kissed a cop down on Thirty-Fourth and Vine
He broke my little bottle of Love Potion Number Nine

There is another side to this story that no one has brought up. That officer has no way of knowing if the suspect might pull out a concealed knife or gun while giving him a hug or get beaten up without warning. Take a look at what happened in this YouTube Video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZycNjZ4iCw

I would have not been so harsh on this person as to charge him with assault on a peace officer. I would have let him off with a warning on the condition that he attend some kind of a short training seminar on why this is inappropriate.

It was a hug no harm was done. I mean come on assault is a crime of violence the best this cop had on him was battery. Anyways this is overreacted and abused his power.

Legally, assault is verbal, battery is physical... battery is defined as any unwelcome touching...

THAT IS NONSENSE

assault is physical violence or the undeniable threat of violence.
battery is beating someone with a blunt object, (um...like a baseball bat).
harassment is verbal.

That is true but a police officer has no way of knowing if that hug may have an ulterior motive behind it. That police officer had the crap beaten out of her with no warning.

It was a hug. I hug people, all the time if they want one.
