I don’t know about where you’re at but the traffic here in southern California is just as bad as ever. If anyone has any idea why please let me know. I’ve been racking my brain over it for months now and came up with diddly.

Traffic here in North Atlanta is all but DEAD during the week - compared to the go-go days. I can understand a small decline - but there are NO cars. It's weird. ANd the cars have gotten a lot smaller and more modest. Maybe a lot more people working from home. (I do.)

On the other hand, the malls are bustling on the weekend. Traffic is a bear around the malls.

It's easier to cross the street, because there seems to be a lot less cars on the roads.

Sellers of merchandise are actually trying to be more polite and are working harder, to please their customers!

I must be missing out. Things seem pretty normal 'round these parts. But then I do live at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

Although I'll say this: watching business news has never been more fun. I'm having a blast for the time being.

People might actually start listening to Libertarians.

And now I deviate from the thread format with my thoughts...

Quote:
Also, this crisis has allowed Obama to take measures he normally would not have been allowed to take, such as spending billions in green research, science and technology. Who knows, maybe in 5-10 years the US will become the leader in new technology and innovations, and become self-sufficient and not need to rely on middle east oil anymore.

The private sector should be the ones spending that money (possibly with some Government tax breaks and the like). This is not the role of government as outlined in the Constitution. Further, much of the money is being spent in ridiculously ineffective ways. There is no such thing as clean coal.

They say that the younger generation will actually benefit from it. Houses are much cheaper now, and by the time the young people retire, the recession will be long gone, so really the only major way it's affecting younger people is that they are able to afford nicer areas than they'd normally be able to.

This is assuming that the recession does not become a depression. There are a number of people who correctly predicted this whole mess who are saying we're in for even worse things in the future. As long as people are greedy, and as long as the Federal Reserve is willing to artificially lower interest rates (again), I don't see it getting better.

Quote:
I don’t hear anything on the news from the idiots who wanted people to invest their social security taxes in the stock market.

There are still plenty of places to safely invest. People should absolutely have the option to opt-out of SS, or at the very least invest it safely (SS is not safe). Calling those people idiots is...something you probably shouldn't do. Investing in high-risk over SS is kind of dumb, but investment alternatives to SS is not dumb at all.

Maybe then we can stop living in an economy and get back to living in a community.

Socialism on a national level is no longer viable in this world economy. If you want Socialism, it will have to be multinational. Considering that won't happen in our lifetime, I hope they turn towards a truly free market. Free markets get a bad name because people think our current economy is a free market (it isn't).

Nothing in this world comes free. everything has a price, whether or not it's paid now or later.

We are getting a tax refund! Cha-ching! Totally didn't expect that! It's been years...! Unemployment and sucking off your shrinking nest-egg rules!

Going to build a fence so we can get another Jack Russell. So, that's money back into the building sector! And the pet market! :D

MmeLePen, I can see a return to some sense of normalcy in time for, a word of caution should be used here as, no to expect some sort of turnaround overnight or within mere weeks or such. Actually, I feel over the course of the next few months if not the year the economic structure should gradually start to rebuild itself to a level of stability along with getting rid of greedy, selfish people whom brought about much of what has been going on without going into a lengthy diatribe as such...
