I at times have to think about which hand I write with in order to tell which way is left and which way is right.

This is more of an autism thing, I think.

I get confused too, and it sucks. Especially in JROTC.

Yep! I'm 44 years old (don't feel it though) and I still go about this the same way you do RetNet56 8)

...and, for this same reason, looking at things in mirrors drives me insane!

I can't figure anything out in a mirror  ...so, for one, I don't use mirrors when reversing a car...

I tend to lift my hands just slightly in order to identify which is right and which is left. I don't look at them, so I don't know why it helps for me to lift them, but I do. I played piano for 7 years, you'd think I'd know which is which.

I'm fine with them now, but it took me until I was 9-ish to learn them.

I have a scar on my right thumb and have to rub it with my right index finger to tell right from left sometimes.

I've always had trouble with left and right. It became an issue in junior high when I started needing to use a locker for school. I couldn't work the lock because I kept turning it right-left-right instead of left-right-left! Or was it the other way around? I don't remember.

It took me a loooong time, but I finally learned this. However, I will never learn which drapery cord to pull.

I have the exact same problem. My parents would get mad at me when I would have to stop and think about right or left. I still do have to stop and think sometimes. I always thought it was because I have mix dominance with my hands.

I get left & right confused a lot. I'm dyslexic & I think that may be common with it. I get lots of things confused

Same. I forget quite often, too, and have to take 10 seconds to remember.

me toooo. if someone asks for directions i cant always think which is which off the top of my head so i just have to point in the direction i mean. or do the 'L' thing with my thumb and index finger to work it out, but that makes me take a long pause so usually i just go with the pointing

Same here. Always do the "L" thing with my index and thumb.
Though I don't ALWAYS have to get it into my visual field anymore before I get it.
You'd think that since my bicycle accident and the damage to my (pause) right knee, I'd be able to remember simply by checking the pain in my leg when I bend it... Gotta try that.

I have always needed my hands to remember left from right. If I don't use my hands, I mess up the directions. Sometimes friends call me out on this. I say "turn left after the grocery store" and they say, "you don't have to point, I know which way left is". Well I don't know. That information is stored in my hands, not my brain. So if I don't point or otheriwse use my hands, I don't know left from right. If I ever break a hand and have it in a cast I'll be seriously directionally impaired.

I can remember right and left ok - it's actually remembering which hand I like to write with. I prefer my right but sometimes I accidentally start writing with my left. I just forget.

It took me a long time to learn left and right when I was a kid-I still can get mixed up to this day
