I posted this in Random Discussions so that it would headline on the home page.

Recently, “Has WP been hostile to gays?” was locked. I didn’t care for the conversation there much and wasn’t watching it closely. Nevertheless, while I personally didn’t like the turn of the conversation, I’m not sure why it was locked. I’ve reviewed the rules and didn’t see any clear violations.

I feel strongly that when a thread is locked, the person(s) responsible should identify themselves and the reason. Owners of WrongPlanet reserve the right to delete, edit, move, or lock any thread, but they don’t have to keep their identities or reasons a secret, and stating the reason would help some of us better understand and comply with the rules. I know I need help with that sometimes.

I’d personally like to see an amendment to the rules to the effect that when a thread is locked, a reason will be given at the end of the thread. “This thread has been locked by… because…”

What do ya’ll think?

When a thread is locked without an obvious reason, like harassment or nonsense posts, it should be given an explanation.

My guess it was locked because it became a simple fight between a few people who
in fairness if you study their post (all of them not just that thread) are conflict/meltdown loving people.

Yes, but that's not prohibited in the rules.

I agree with you that there should be an explanation given for locked threads.

Yes, I think Admin/moderators are obliged to give reasons for deleting posts and locking threads.

I'd also like an explination of what happened to Comrade Snowball.

Agree.

If the reason isn't obvious to everyone, then a reason might need to be given.

I agree. If were not told why something is locked, we'll probably all get pissed and riot... 8)

Thanks for notifying me of that. I will look into it as soon as possible. I'm very busy with the WP migration at present time, however.

Bahahahaha! Gawd I love Orwellian references, even in a humorous context.

I locked it due to a complaint I received about excessive conflict on WP which mentioned that thread. I can see why you guys want to know about posts being locked and I hope you don't kill me for taking so long to respond to respond to this.

Although, TheMachine1 has a valid point. There's only so much you can say and that thread started to get a little out of hand, if I recall correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong. Anyhow, I hope you guys still love me.

Of course we still love you. I'd still like to see some sort of formal amendment to the rules. This is not about the decisions you make, it's about providing people with more information. Maybe we need to think/talk about a "Member's Bill of Rights."
