If you started going out with someone and they told you they were pretty decent with an instrument, were convinced they could make a career out of music and they played the instrument and sang worse than some of the worst people on some of those rubbish talent shows quite a lot in your company, and they were totally tone deaf - how long would it take you to crack and tell them?
