I read the article in full and found more things that got me wound up:
Epidemic?! !? Flitch, it's just popping up more than usual, man! Aren't you over-reacting there!?!
First question: What do you mean by "federal assault"? Are we assaulting people just by being ourselves? Sometimes it may seem that way when we really don't mean it to, but it doesn't get much worse than that, does it?!
Second question: What about the ones who actually have this so-called "epidemic"? Have you ever thought to ask them how they feel? I'm getting the impression that you think that as long as they have AS, they are slightly stupid and therefore have no right to voicing their own opinion. Oh yeah, you're really good to those kids, aren't you?!
You're only talking about the most severe cases there, those should be the ones you should be talking about. Furthermore, while they are more troublesome and up the Spectrum, would you try and cure someone who was mentally handicapped? While AS and Autism is in it's own area, sometimes it can be similar to those people. And a "national healthcare crisis"? It's not a freaking disease!! !
Great, now we're being swarmed from all corners. I'm fearing for my mental health now. Thanks you guys.
Note that all but the last quote were not said by the press release, rather are quotes from people within CAN and Autism Speaks.

CAN has become part of Autism Speaks now and I think will not be using the CAN label anymore but this was very, very recent so the merger might not be entirely complete yet. Also - in the actual bill - there is mandatory screening for all children and with the federal requirements others have wondered if the government will "keep track" of those on the spectrum. If anyone has not read the bill in it's entirety they really should because this stuff may be effecting you and others on the spectrum whether you agree or not.

The organisations in the US that are pushing this - Cure Autism Now and Autism Speaks - are some seriously frightening people. Imagine if there were organisations who treated black, Jewish or any other race as a disease? Yet because some of us have social difficulties (which get more and more difficult for people who function less) they want to eradicate us. We're a disease, and we need to be controlled? Do you understand this? Do you? Think about it. This should be sickening to any reasonable and tolerant member of our society. Adolf Hitler would have ejaculated over and over again at the very idea.
What attracts me to libertarianism is the idea that my liberty and those who are weaker will be protected. Also, the tolerance for being different appeals to me. I don't trust this or any other, future government not to make life for people like us increasingly difficult.
Every day for me is a challenge and it is one I relish. Some basic things like socialising with people and assertiveness are difficult. Eye contact used to be impossible. I spend all the time trying to improve on my social skills. But this is the answer, not a massacre. People who have these difficulties can better themselves and make use of the skills they have. While I don't have a huge amount of friends or a girlfriend I have my family and a few friends down my local pub. I do get down occasionally but after a day or two I simply pick myself up and charge at the world again.
Everything to me is a challenge, but it's something I enjoy. Life is like building blocks that you stack on top of each other. Next year I go on a course for people with sight difficulties. I'm looking forward to it. I will never let myself be treated as anything less than a full human being with my own liberties, needs and desires. We are free people. Let no-one 'screen' this out of us. Defend your very right to exist to the last man.
Sorry if that was a bit too personal and "us versus them" for you all but I felt it was something I needed to share.
Here is a link to the "offical" Combating Autism Website
It has a copy of the Senate Bill and House version. However, they were haggling over terms so I do not know if this is what was passed.

Here were some revisions from 2005 which offer additional explanations:

I was watching MSNBC, and that's the headline they said. It's the Muscular Dystrophy thing. "Help us eliminate this awful disease. Help us declare war on something we don't understand."
Politely, I say HUMBUG.

That's okay Tequila (I actually picked up part of it from another post of yours I saw). Just as a side-note, it is an "Us vs Them" scenario, but that doesn't mean "them" includes everyone but us, and it also doesn't mean we aren't willing to receive help from others "not in the fight". It just means everyone who supports these people fully, and know all of the factors (sometimes you may get those who want it to be cured, but then go 'Oh, wait a sec, that isn't right at all!' and switch sides. We have to remember those people). I'm seeing this as becoming very similar to the black rights thing that happened so many years ago (studied it in Social Studies two years ago). I only hope that it won't come to that and, if it does, it'll have a similar, if not better result.
I will, like those who have before us (namely blacks and other such people who had to do this sort of thing), fight for my own rights and freedom of, quite frankly, original way of thinking. Now, I'll go read those links walk-in-the-rain kindly provided for us.

I really didn't define 'them' well enough. I wasn't referring to everybody else, and that's not the way I wanted it to be read. I meant those extreme curebies. And any help is always welcome.
(KBABZ: It was one sentence. I was checking to see if anyone spotted it. Ten points for being observant.)

Gives a whole new meaning to that scene with Morpheous in the first Matrix movie, doesn't it??
"Here are the two pills. If you take the blue one, you will go back to sleep, and eventually be put in a re-education camp for your own good. Or you can take the red pill, and scream for your football team, cut people off in traffic, have meaningless sex with complete strangers, buy the worthless crao the TV commercials tell you to, in short: be NT like us ! !! !"

^I know, I know. I just felt like some others might think otherwise (y'know, in case this may be used against us or something weird like that). I've always seen the Us vs Them scenario as like that.
