I've never been totally clear on what :P means...sometimes it seems to mean "just kidding" but then other times I can't figure it out. Does it have a variety of meanings or am I just oblivious to many of the jokes in text?

I've always thought of it as a way to express silliness.

Yeah, or "I can't believe I'm saying this" or "crazy but true" or "this is amusing" or "this is ridiculous".

It carries many shades of meaning, most of them positive. :P :D

I used to use it while expressing sweetness, but I use this image now.

Thanks for replying, guys!

It seems a bit like laughter -- people laugh for all sorts of reasons, some of them similar to the meanings you guys explained (e.g. silliness, amusement, surprise, delight, etc. etc.)... this smiley confuses me a lot more, though.

Yay for examples! What does your smiley mean?

I really like the image you use to express sweetness -- spot on!

I like to make compound smileys or sequential smileys sometimes. So that one is meant to be as if I'm smiling after sticking out my tongue. Or it could also be interpreted as I'm sticking out my tongue in a smiling way, not a disgusted way. :)

Well it wouldn't be used to convey depression now would it? :P

Thanks for explaining!

Everybody's posts have been very helpful -- I've got a better idea of what expressions the smiley goes with, which is great even if I don't always understand why the expressions might be there :D
