Everyone gets bored sometimes. It's a fact of life. Occasional boredom gives us a chance to be creative with our thoughts, and causes us to appreciate the exciting times in life.
However, it is extremely unhealthy to be chronically bored - simply bored with life. This is directly related to anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure).
Like me, there are many other people on wrongplanet.com who struggle with loneliness, and relationships.
Here is the problem. Lonliness is a manifestion of chronic boredom. If one had pleasure, one would not need to fill one's life with friendships or a relationship.
I am a very sexually frustrated young man- a 19 year old virgin- who struggles terribly with women. I only just realized that I desparately want to be in a meaningful relationship (with both emotional and physical benefits), because I'm simply...bored with myself, and bored with porn.
Boredom happens when we are denied our basic instincts.
Boredom can be very hazardous to one's mental and physical health. People who are chronically bored with life are more likely to take harmful risks in order to fight boredom.
For example: drugs, vandalism, getting a prostitute. Some may even pursue serious crimes for the adrenaline rush. Anything to cure that undying dull, bored, restless state.
I find that I have the greatest desire to get stoned when I am bored...lol...which is almost all of the time I am awake.
Chronic Boredom leads to apathy. Apathy leads to mischief. Mischief leads to dire consequences.
Chronic boredom eats away at my self-control after each long, long, long, tiresome, tedious day.
The key to staying out of trouble is this: Have a reason to wake up in the morning. Everyone on Wrongplanet.com has a purpose in life. You have to realize what that purpose is, and fulfill that purpose each day.
The problem is that I don't have a reason to wake up in the morning. I have no one and nothing to wake up to.
A word of warning for all those struggling with addiction:
boredom is the first step towards relapse.
My drug counsellor says that "denial" and "indifference" are the causes of relapse. However, he neglected to mention that "boredom" is the cause of said denial and indifference.
When you are bored, you are stuck with yourself and your own thoughts- some of which can be disturbing. This is when you are most vulnerable.
Boredom is a prerequisite for loneliness, desperation, and trouble.
To all of you on Wrongplanet.com,
I bid you...good night.
I hope this little rant that I wrote was of some help.
