Everyone gets bored sometimes. It's a fact of life. Occasional boredom gives us a chance to be creative with our thoughts, and causes us to appreciate the exciting times in life.

However, it is extremely unhealthy to be chronically bored - simply bored with life. This is directly related to anhedonia (the inability to feel pleasure).

Like me, there are many other people on wrongplanet.com who struggle with loneliness, and relationships.

Here is the problem. Lonliness is a manifestion of chronic boredom. If one had pleasure, one would not need to fill one's life with friendships or a relationship.

I am a very sexually frustrated young man- a 19 year old virgin- who struggles terribly with women. I only just realized that I desparately want to be in a meaningful relationship (with both emotional and physical benefits), because I'm simply...bored with myself, and bored with porn.

Boredom happens when we are denied our basic instincts.

Boredom can be very hazardous to one's mental and physical health. People who are chronically bored with life are more likely to take harmful risks in order to fight boredom.

For example: drugs, vandalism, getting a prostitute. Some may even pursue serious crimes for the adrenaline rush. Anything to cure that undying dull, bored, restless state.

I find that I have the greatest desire to get stoned when I am bored...lol...which is almost all of the time I am awake.

Chronic Boredom leads to apathy. Apathy leads to mischief. Mischief leads to dire consequences.

Chronic boredom eats away at my self-control after each long, long, long, tiresome, tedious day.

The key to staying out of trouble is this: Have a reason to wake up in the morning. Everyone on Wrongplanet.com has a purpose in life. You have to realize what that purpose is, and fulfill that purpose each day.

The problem is that I don't have a reason to wake up in the morning. I have no one and nothing to wake up to.

A word of warning for all those struggling with addiction:

boredom is the first step towards relapse.

My drug counsellor says that "denial" and "indifference" are the causes of relapse. However, he neglected to mention that "boredom" is the cause of said denial and indifference.

When you are bored, you are stuck with yourself and your own thoughts- some of which can be disturbing. This is when you are most vulnerable.

Boredom is a prerequisite for loneliness, desperation, and trouble.

To all of you on Wrongplanet.com,
I bid you...good night.

I hope this little rant that I wrote was of some help.

I am still looking for my ultimate purpose, though I study and work excessively at the moment. I don't have time to talk to myself in circles which is a good thing. Definately find something to fill your time with. Drawing, Reading, Working, Setting challenges...theres millions of things out there. I know what you are feeling. If it makes you feel any better, I have found a way to deal with this and I know that you can aswell.

My chronic boredom is tied to my biology, because come 4 PM I am wiped out. Between 4 PM and 6 PM for some reason I just crash. I get so tired. It doesn't matter what I do to try to prevent it. At that time I'm in my last class at school. It's an easy business typing class with a very laid back prof, but it's Snoozapalooza '07 in there. It's so boring I even consider suicide in half-jest.

Inattention is highly comorbid with ASD. Boredom is a natural consequence of inattention. The things your mind dreams up to stimulate itself out of that boredom is the very definition of "the devils workshop".

Treating the inattention likely reduces alot of the chronic boredom and it also likely reduces ones ability to dream up risky solutions to it. Though you might just be content with being a boring persons to.

If you find something that makes you happy, that is a good thing. If you are seeking such a thing because you would like pleasure from another source, specifically friendships or a relationship, and you don't consider that to be a reachable goal, then it isn't as good. At that point you are trying to distract yourself from what you truly want. It may last for a while, but I'm not one to believe that it would be a permanent, ideal solution.

A story about the dangers of boredom.

Little eight year old Ed Almos was visiting his Aunt Martha and Uncle Harry, everyone had gone off to the mall leaving Ed in the house with Uncle Harry who was fast asleep. A recent purchase was a screwdriver set and Ed was dying to try it out on something as he had read all his comics and he was VERY bored. Suddenly he saw the clock above the fire.

Five minutes later little Ed had removed the back of the antique clock and he was able to see all the interesting stuff inside.

Ten minutes later he had removed the clock mechanism from the case.

One hour later everyone returned to find Ed in tears and bits of clock all over the front room. When the back plate of the mechanism was removed lots of bits flew off in random directions and not all of them could be found. From what I remember the repair bill was quite large.

Never leave a bored eight year old alone with a screwdriver set ! !

Ed Almos

I find it odd how the severity of suffering one can experience from extreme boredom is so underrated. There should be stronger word for the more severe kind of boredom but there isn't. I'm talking about the kind that will drive a person mad. Like from solitary confinement.

I struggled with it a lot as a child and sometimes it was absolute torture. I would sometimes roll around on the floor and cry when I got really bored. Parents didn't get it at all. They treated me like I was just being a spoiled brat.

chronic boredom sucks
im thinkin of inventing a species of dragon that goes into our eyes and eats the things that make you see so that you go temporeriy blind so that people appreciate sight and say yay littlesmiley is the best andthe gravy will be nice and the toast will be buttered and i will get the hiccups and the universe will nearly implode and then my parasitic dragons will be happy because they blinded someone.
if you can make sense of that then you myst have taken so much time that you really are bored

I prefer not to use the term "spoiled brat" on anyone, because it can so eaily be misinterpreted as hateful. People have perfectly legit reasons for being spoiled brats. :)

I've felt this for the majority of my remembered life (not saying much), and this is the first time I've learned that there was a single word for it.
