You had take an option to pay-as-you-use basis. Ford Focus costs you £14.00 daily to use or the Escort £7.00 daily to use. What car would you use every day if you was on an income of 21k or less yearly
The Ford Focus costing £14.00 daily 9%  9%  [ 1 ]
The Ford Escort costing £7.00 daily 91%  91%  [ 10 ]

It cost £100 a week to own an average new car.
http://archive.oxfordmail.net/2003/12/17/16072.html

It cost £50(£2600) or Less a week to own a used car. The costs are very conservative it could be much less if you don’t travel much. Lets say you spend £600 on a P reg Ford Escort and spend £600 year after that on repairs mot, or buying a new Escort, £400 yearly insurance, third party fire and theft. And £190 on text. That leaves you 1410 yearly to spend on petrol.

Now lets take for example you owned to cars Ford Escort and a new Ford Focus. You had take an option to pay as you use basis. Ford Focus costs you £14.00 daily to use or the Escort £7.00 daily to use. What car would you use every day if you was on an income of 21k or less yearly.

I don't know the translation of English pounds into Australian dollars but if I was on 21 thousand and I had to have a car.. i'd take the cheapest. No questions asked, no beg your pardons.

Give me more money to spend on other more essential items. (that is, if 21k pounds is as much of a pittance as 21K AU dollars)

I own a Ford Escort. I'm very satisfied with it.

I did not vote, but...

I live in the US and I drive what's called a medium-sized pickup truck.. the Dodge Dakota.
Since my divorce, my income has gone down.
I just drive less and combine more trips into one if I can.

I am currently shopping for a car (as opposed to owning just a truck) which will get better gas mileage and be able to hold more people, more comfortably than my truck.
But... I will have to factor in payments and insurance for a second vehicle (the truck is paid off and the insurance is pretty low).

I do not think I fit into a Ford Escort (US version) well enough to feel safe.. I am 6'2" and 215lbs.
I do not know what a Ford Focus looks like although I think it's bigger than an Escort?
If that is so, then based upon my comfort alone, I'd have to go with the Focus.

One also needs to take into account other expenses like maintenance, tires (tyres).

I have, they are included in both cars. £600 yearly(after first year of ownership) for the escort. With that money yearly you can use that money on maintainance or buy a new car.

It makes you think. Do you pay £7 extra a day for the pleasure of driving a slightly more comfortable car or a car that might impress the ladies.

Then a again, if you earn less then 21k, that equals around £7 an hour after tax, would not prefer to go home early opposed to spending the extra hour at work to pay for the more luxurious car.

Why buy a car that will 'impress' women? I think most women grow out of that once they get past about 16 anyway don't they? The best cars are the ones that are Japanese, are about 10 years old and cost less than £1k. Not much depreciation on a car like that and you have relatively inexpensive, trouble-free motoring to look forward to!

actually, I used to drive a Ford Focus. In 4 years I went through 3 transmissions, and found out later it had had 2 more. The mileage was right, it's just the transmissions sucked big...well, never mind the analogy...;)

Don't drive a Ford Focus at all...your wallet will thank you...;) I just had the tow truck haul the @#$% out of here last week, $150 ('bout 70 pounds) for it...:|

I'd say tequila that he is using it as an example for a reason why someone would buy a car above and beyond cheap ass piece of crap that gets you from A to B. The thinking "as long as it gets you there, and doesn't cost much" is only one option when considering the purchase of a motorised vehicle.

Comfort, prestige, sexual concessions, penis extension, economy, practicality, personality, exhilaration, are all valid categories to asses when making a purchase for a car (list not exhaustive) and depending on the weight you give each one depends on the eventual car you drive (at least... as much as "thickness of wallet" allows you to value each of those things separately)

Well, if you would rather look like an moron with more money than sense that's up to him. If I were him, I'd be looking to spend my money wisely and not in the vain hope of finding some fanny.

I don't think he actually asserted that as a reason why he chose his car. It was a throwaway line as to a reason why someone might buy a more expensive car.
