I find it very convenient for me to express my feelings by writing rather than speaking. I feel I need to pause to think about what I should say and how to say it before I express myself. You can do so many times when you're writing a message, but not when you're talking with someone face-to-face. I don't want to say things that can offend or piss people off.

Yes. It seems like my thoughts get jumbled whenever I try to express my feelings by speaking. Writing just sorts everything out and make it easier.

I am glad I am not alone in this.
Thank you for the responses. I was starting to think maybe the specialist got things wrong because I can express emotions via the written word

Have you started liking girls yet, Ezra?

When you do start liking girls (or whatever you're into), you'll understand poetry better.

Much of poetry is about frustrated love.

Absolutely. Writing is really the only way I can express myself.

I hate poetry though. (Ironically, my first post on WP was poetry.)

Sounds like a typical NT "expert" to me, that is someone who doesn't really have a clue. Just like we "all" hate fiction and are math geniuses etc.

No, from what I see that's extremely typical for us. Aspies tend to be strong verbally.

When aspie Martin Møller-Nordbye published his book "Martins verden" (Martin's world), the cover said that it was a rare book because few people with his diagnosis was capable of explaining their situation.
OMG so wrong. *facepalm*

OMG yes!! It is so much easier to express myself in writing than in spoken words. I can edit it until I get it right, take the time I need and polish it.
Everything is easier in writing, and in particular expressing such emotions as love, appreciation and sympathy. Those are very awkward things to say, and so much easier to write!
I was always told in school that my writing was good.

Believe it or not, it was another female with diagnosed Asperger's who said this. She has two sons on the spectrum also. Granted, some aspies are not emotionally expressive whether through spoken or written word, but I am one who can express her inner world relatively well through writing it out as there is none of the distraction of face to face interaction, no pressure, no having to think quickly.Even so, I still cannot really pick up on more subtle feelings within myself, just the main ones. Truth be told, I am a little disappointed that she found it difficult to understand how someone with Aspergers can express their inner world so well on facebook and so openly. Well, from what I can see here, it is not uncommon. In fact, quite a few aspies to have a tendency to share too much sometimes anyway.

When I was a kid, I used to "share" too much.

My parents were always "shushing" me when we were in "company."

When it came to the Capital Cities of the world, I was a veritable motormouth.

If I don't restrain myself, I tend to end up telling my "life story" to people.

Ironically, though I express myself better in writing than orally, I am really not good at writing down my own thoughts. I tend to want to edit them too much. That's why I've never kept a diary.

I find it easier to say how I feel by writing rather then speech, I find when I'm talking its hard to explain things and it comes out wrong, when I'm writing I can stop and think about what I want to say.

I express myself a thousand times better in writing. Thus is why I can seldom carry conversations or even speak on the phone yet I have dozens upon dozens of published editorials, song lyrics and screenplays.

I hear you. It's always disappointing to get that kind of feedback from a fellow aspie.

No, it's not uncommon. That was one of the first impressions I got when I first came to WP.

Communication in general is drastically easier through writing. But I'm not good at expressing emotions either way.

Yes, though I still sometimes struggle to find the right word (or words) for what I'm thinking or feeling. But I at least have time to think about what I'm saying before I say it. Otherwise the talking in my head is just spilling out of my mouth unfiltered.

One time I said something to my friend that I realized after saying it that he probably wouldn't understand what I meant (it was a reference to something he isn't interested in at all, something he said made me think of it), so I said, "Oh, never mind, you probably wouldn't get that." Then he for some reason felt the need to interrogate me about why I would say something if I knew he wouldn't get it. I tried explaining verbally, and it took me about 10 minutes before he finally understood that when I'm talking to someone out loud, sometimes I don't have enough time to think about those things before they spill out. And I wasn't saying it for him anyway, I was just saying it because it popped in my head and I wanted to say it. He didn't seem to understand that either.

If I have to express my feelings I'd do it verbally. However this is my last resort. I don't like to feel.

I wrote lots of parody poems and lyrics as a child and still do sometimes.

I find it easier to express my feelings on paper when I'm writing them down in a note or a letter. I find it very hard to write poetry.

I find it much easier to express my emotions on paper. I'm pretty shy in person.
