I really want to see this movie. I never think there will be a portrayal of AS or Autism that everyone agrees is "correct"... Because, if you make a character out of all the traits that your "average" aspie has, then people are going to call it a two-dimensional stereotype that isn't much of an individual. And then if you make a very individual character who also happens to have AS, people are going to complain that it doesn't focus on enough of the different "symptoms" or that the character isn't a good representation of the average Aspie. Then if they focus on someone who happens to be particularly maladaptive, it's seen as over-the-top.
I liked Mozart and the Whale. Yeah, i thought the characters weren't representative of your "average" aspies... some symptoms were particularly exaggerated and stuff, but there are probably SOME aspies out there who are very similar to those characters in many ways, too. You can't expect to completely relate to an aspie character in every way just because they're an aspie.. Because there should be more to the character than that, especially if you want an interesting movie. Plus, everyone has a different "set" of aspie characteristics. Like on The Big Bang Theory, i don't really relate to Sheldon as much as a lot of people here seem to. Sure, i never know what to say in a social situation, and i will start stating a bunch of facts about this or that pretty often... But i don't turn into a crazy person if someone sits in my chair, i try pretty hard to not come off as stuck-up or un-concerned with other peoples' feelings, and i don't insist that everyone do exactly what i want to do all the time. But, he is an interesting character, not just a flat representation of your
"average aspie," whatever that even is. He's an individual who probably is an aspie, and there are some things people are going to relate to him about and others they won't.
