Lots of wise and witty folk, with the whole of literary history to pick from:

"If one wishes to find consolation in this world, one must be prepared to accept at least one or two large lies" Graf Ulrich von Bek (Michael Moorcock)

"Mankind are a herd of knaves and fools. It is necessary to join the crowd,or get out of their way, in order not to be trampled to death by them." Willliam Hazlitt.

Let me go away and find something for a brighter mood...

Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both

I've never been sure about that one.
My double pneumonia left me feeling like hell, and weak as a kitten.
My lungs have never been the same since.

Ladysmokeater, your: "Well behaved women never make history.... "

Reminded me of a very quotable American:

"A free society is one where it is safe to be unpopular."

"You will find that the truth is often unpopular and the contest between agreeable fancy and disagreeable fact is unequal. For, in the vernacular, we Americans are suckers for good news. "

"An editor is someone who separates the wheat from the chaff and then prints the chaff."
Adlai E. Stevenson
