Looking people in the eye, what is about the eye that makes us go all funny?

I really don't know. Perhaps the stimuli from what the eye gives is too much?

To me, direct eye contact looks more like mini boiled eggs, than like eyes.

For me, it's hard to process multiple stimuli (in this case, visual and auditory) at the same time. It's easiest for me to listen if I actually close my eyes or stare off into space at nothing, or a blank wall, or the ceiling.

It's the confusion with the whole trying to read facial expressions and the eyes often send the most confusing signals and it just causes stress and anxiety to have to focus on them.

A few visits to my sycologist, I was looking him in the eyes but didn't want to look away and be rude, so I stare right at them, I sat there, almost like I was under hypnosis. lol

Perhaps this might help answer the question:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_contac ... processing

Sounds like a good theory to me--the more eye contact you make, the stupider you get! :cyclopsani:

It's embarrassing when I catch myself doing it becuase I look at people awkward and when I speak, I speak at a flat soft tone. I try to force myself to look at something nearby so it looks like I'm looking at them.

It's hard to come up with a reason, but if I had to think of one, I believe my thoughts might tend to stop flowing when I'm staring directly at one thing. Meaning, I'll probably get lost staring into a person's eyes, and my conversational thoughts will cease. It's kind of like the one car accident I had... I started staring at the taillights of the car in front of me (which kind of look like eyes, in a way), and I got stuck staring there. If I look around at other things, my thoughts can continue to flow. If something grabs my eye and I feel compelled to stare too long, I might forget the more important tasks at hand. I don't know, just a thought. Sort of makes sense to me, anyway.

Well, when I was with my sycologist, I always seem to look him in the eye and I lose track of what he is saying becuase I don't know, it's weird. I sit there like I'm under hypnosis, lol.

Makes me uncomfortable, I feel like someone is reading my soul when I look at their eyes, Same feeling I get around hippies.

Why do some people want to look others in the eye... is my question...

The reasons probably vary depending on the person you talk to. Eye contact for me is intimate and suggestive. Looking someone in the eye is akin to getting undressed and having sex.

Is that what they mean by talking about undressing people with their eyes?

No. To undress someone with your eyes means to mentally undress them. Check them out... play out a fantasy in your head. My aversion to eye contact is because eye contact is very intimate to me. Someone who undresses another with their eyes is usually staring at their body.
